I recently just bought a certified highlander out of town and they gave me only a valet key. I wanted to go about replacing it with a master key but the dealer i said they did not have a master key for me. I went to a local dealer to get a quote on getting a master but they would have to rekey the entire car. since i do not have at least one master key. I am at a STUMP on what i should do as far as getting a master key. and do i need a master key to program a keyless remote (FOB)?

I *BELIEVE* there is some small difference between the regular keys and the master keys. I know my gray key will not open the glove box, but it will do all other functions. I will compare mine later and let you know.

That's what the dealer told me...the only function the valet key won't do is open the glove box.
The dealer that i took it to told me that i can go from Black key to gray key but cannot go vice versa because of the chip in the black key. So i'm thinking i need a master key in order to program the FOB.
did you ask them WTH happened to the other keys????? the dogs ate it????
Some people trade in cars with only one key. I have done it. I was kind when I traded in the last one, the new owners got a valet key, master key & new remote. You would think that a dealer would at least get a master key made for a vehicle before they sold it..

You have the right to return this vehicle and it should have never been sold as certified without a master key. You can actually file a lawsuit against this dealer as well. Every EVERY certified Toyota is required to have a master key present.
The only thing is I hope you really did buy a certified vehicle and not just a vehicle that still had warranty on it. If that is the case then you are going to have a tough time. You would have to prove that the salesman told you it was certified and therefore mislead you into believing it was a "Toyota Certified Pre-Owned, AKA CPO." If you are within 3 days you may be able to return the vehicle. Check the back of your contract for the "cooling off" period/right of recission for pre-owned vehicles. There is no cooling off for new cars but there is ALMOST always one for pre-owned vehicles. If you like the car, the price you paid and it is certified, you can always simply demand that they give you a master key.
Good luck!
EDIT: In case it does turn into legal drama here is the contact info you would need to assist you in Texas. Don't be afraid to open that can of WHOOP ASS!
I had completely opposite situation. Upon deliver of brand new HL the valet key was missing. So they just cut me a 3rd black key. They do not physically make a copy of the key. They use VIN number to derive to a combination of numbers entered into key cutter (back when I was working at the dealer it was a hand held devise). My 3rd key was cut and ready prior to my arrival and I was out in 5 min after registering the new key with computer.

Why would someone want to keep the keys if they no longer own the vehicle?
