The TPMS sensor is attached to the valve stem. The unit sends the tire pressure to the on board computer system which turns on the warning light if you have a low tire. Any decent tire shop should be able to handle fixing a flat tire on a vehicle with TPMS as it has been around for several years.

Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on how it works:

Any mechanic who is incompetent enough to NOT be able to handle TMPS needs to be scrutinized by a higher authority. For example, years ago I took an Acura I owned into a local shop for an alignment and the bozos left it with an extreme left pull. I took the car back and had them redo the work, but it came back with the same extreme pull. When I went back for a refund the owner demanded I allow them to work on it a third time to "make it right," whereby I refused and contacted the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Turned out the shop was operating without a license as well as other legal violations and was shut down. Point is there's a certain level of competency that should be expected of any mechanic, and if they don't meet that level something should be done about it. Would you take your kid to a doctor with inadequate medical competency?

BTW, for anyone living in the Orange County area of California I can recommend and excellent independent mechanic who works on my Highlander and Avalon. He's literally the best mechanic I've ever had.
