USA Headlight Warning

I'm new the forum and the search function would not work, so I appologize if this question has been asked

I have a 2008 Highlander Base model, which I love, but there has been one thing that bugs me (besides the rattles and squeaks ), there is no warning buzzer if I leave my headlighs on. I have the old style headlights that have to manually turned off and on and sometimes I forget to turn them off. But there is no beeping or buzzing to warn me the lights are still on, like it does if I leave my keys in the car. Is this something that can be changed or am I out of luck?

Thanks in advance.

First, let me welcome you to Toyota Nation and the Highlander forums too!

I agree I'd prefer a chime with the headlights as well, but as long as you lock the HL the headlights will turn off after 30 seconds. Give it a whirl. BTW, would you mind sending me a private message with any details about the problems you had with the forum's search feature so I can shoot it up to the admins? Thanks!

TrailDust, thanks for the reply. I'm an idiot; I was not performing the search correctly and since have gotten to work.

Do I have to use the lock on the key fob to get that to work? The problem is sometimes I don't want the car to honk when I press the lock button. Also, sometimes when I press the lock button on the key fob it honks 1 time, some times 2 times and even up to 4 separate honks sometimes. Any idea what that means? I probably should tell you I have the VIP Toyota alarm (I bought this car last year with 15,000 miles and no info on how the VIP alarm work).

Sorry for all the questions!

You know, that's a good question. I've never tried it by using the key in the door and seeing if that will work, so I'll have to head out to the garage and check. I don't have an alarm system on my HL so I can't comment on the beeps you're getting, but I'm sure someone else with a similar system will chime in with some insight.

BTW, glad to hear the search feature is working okay. PM me any time if you run into problems or questions with the forums.

Generally:
1 honk - car is locked
2 honks - car is unlocked (driver side only)
4 honks - all doors unlocked

Have you tried to lock the doors manually with your key? That will lock all doors and activate the alarm w/o the horn beep if I'm not mistaken.

And the dealer can change the default 30 second delay to 0 and the lights will go off as soon as you open the drivers door.

See the custom settings sticky below (Bottom of page 555).

On my 2008 base lights go off automatically after 30 sec. No additional programming was needed.

1. Drivers door opened and closed (car is unlocked or locked) - lights will turn off in 30 sec
Note: if any other doors or rear hatch is opened lights will stay on and 30 sec will start counting from the moment when all doors are closed.

2. Remote control "lock" button pressed twice - lights go off immediately

Thanks for all the info.; I locked the car with the remote and the headlights do not turn off. I locked the car with the key and the lights still not turn off. I waited for more than 2 mintues and the lights were still on.

Again, I have to manually turn on the lights by twisting the arm to turn them on and off. I have a feeling I'll just have to remember to always turn off my lights. Thanks anyway.

Something is not right. I'd have the dealer take a look at your vehicle and alarm setup to determine what's preventing the lights from shutting off.

If the driver's door is not opened and closed the headlights won't go off.
