Big Sound, Loud Noise and slipped feeling

Hi All, I experienced something very strange today while I was driving here on Route 9 east , MA. FYI: Weather is terrible here.

I was driving and suddenly I am on the removed area of the road surface markings (meaning: looks like that area was surface marked in the past but now removed and it was probably like 1/2 inch deep or so and not covered and left open) and I heard strange sound and noise and felt like I was slipping and losing control. I never experienced this before ever.

What may have happened?

Is this due to my factory special TOYO tyres on my 17 inch wheels?

Do I need to be concerned??

Thanks

I don't mean to sound like I'm thick in the head, but can you offer any additional details about the control/slippage you experienced? Thanks.

Hi TrailDust: I felt that the vehicle is sliding towards the left edge (driver's side) of the road. The sound was pretty strange as I did not hear anything like that before while driving.

Separately, I also feel wheel slippage while turning (mainly 90 Degree turn) from zero initial velocity mainly back wheels. I am soft foot on the pedal. I have also sometimes observed this while I park in our office underground (6 floors down) and while coming up it is like a hill and feel wheel slippage mainly back ones.

O.K., I'll bite.

My theory of the "slipping" vehicle at speed on route 9. You stated that this part of the highway was unmarked and 1/2" deep. It sounds like road construction crews have "scoured" that part of the road surface. There is a base remaining, and then the crew will resurface the road. The scoured part of the road is not perfectly parallel with the edge of the road so a vehicle will follow the grooves in the road. This will make the vehicle drift side to side as it follows the grooves. It's not slipping. It's the road surface.

As far as slipping in the parking garage, remember that a 245/65R17 is a decent size tire and that the HL has a pretty tight turning radius. The taller the tire and the tighter the turning radius, the more you will get that feel of the front giving way under slow tight corners. I spend half my working day driving in and out of hospital parking ramps and experience that same thing on a regular basis.

Thanks,

Yes, I agree with you in the parking lot scenario.

Route 9: The road is good except in that part which was not covered up I guess. I agree, the vehicle was probably drifting away along those removed uncovered surface markings.

Plus, I also mentioned the weather was terrible too.

Thanks all.

Those grooves are cut intentionally into the shoulders of roads in areas that have snow. They are there just in case you get snow coverage and can't see the road and run off into the shoulder. It vibrates the tire and feels really rough and bumpy so you know you are driving off into the shoulder. The source of this info is from my friend who works for caltrans. You know those guys are never wrong.
