Toyota Highlander with NAV and XM Radio

Hello! I have purchased back in November 2009 Toyota Highlander with NAV system. A week ago, I decided to go with XM satellite radio and ordered OEM XM kit/radio through Toyota dealership. It was installed, but when when I try to activate it, there is only channel CH001 on all 18 presets and SAT icon is flashing. I took it back to dealership and the guy told me that I cannot have nav system with xm because they share same radio connector for their antennas (!) Then, by calling around his friends he figured out there is some other way to connect XM antenna into radio, but yet it is flashing and does not accept XM activation.
Couple of questions:
1) Is this true that GPS of NAV system cannot be used with XM radio. Sounds ridiculous to me for "XM Ready" radio, but go figure with Toyota?
2) Is there respectful place in Toronto area where I can get both installed (assuming it is possible)?
I am about to return the whole kit and cancel my activation with XM because of frustration, but decided to check on this forum if there is anybody out there who has NAV system in highlander working along with OEM XM radio.

Truly appreciate any response!

Shimon

The dealer does not know what they are talking about. I have NAV and XM in my Highlander. The GPS and XM radio do not have the same antenna...the XM kit includes an antenna for the 2008 models and in many 2009 models I believe the XM antenna is preinstalled in the sharkfin on the roof with the XM antenna wire behind the NAV unit. If you don't have the XM antenna in the sharkfin then just have them place an external XM antenna on the roof.

Toyota Highlander with NAV and XM Radio

Jeff,

Thanks for quick reply! I did not say they use same antenna. The mechanic told me that GPS antenna (NAV) and XM antenna are sharing same connector on the back of the radio. Apparently, they need some kind of Y-splitter to connect them both and then to radio.
The funny thing is that all pieces of equipment are purchased through the dealership (comparing to all other electronics I bought elsewhere) I honestly thought that this will be my easiest problem because radio is XM-ready and kit purchased from Toyota itself.
My mechanic claims that Toyota itself told him they are incompatible (I also have iPhone interface module if this makes any difference) and I can have either NAV or XM, but not both at the same time, which drives me crazy as I want both at the same time!

I do have nav but no xm. When I asked about xm the dealer told me that you can not run the ipod interface and xm at the same time, they use the same connector. Maybee your service guy is trying to disconnect the nav so you can have the ipod interface and xm???

I replaced OEM iPod interface (which indeed incompatible with XM) with iSimple iPod interface (allows full control of iPod plus charging via 5v cable) iSimple guys claim it to be fully compatible with XM...

In case anybody interested, here is happy end of the story. Bottom line - you may have XM Satellite radio, iPod interface (but not OEM!) etc. all at once in the vehicle.
I have installed the following extension to the original radio (was not happy until then - toyota original radio and nav suck big time without those extensions):
1. PXAMG iSimple iPod interface from PAC: http://pac-audio.com/productDetails....&CategoryID=36. The unit has to be upgraded to the latest firmware in order to function properly. This unit will allow listing of iPod by author, play list etc. There is no ridiculous limitation of original OEM module on 99 songs (was very irritating!)
2. Toyota override switch from Presigious Society: http://www.prestigioussociety.com/To...-Override.html This will allow to "freeze" screen during driving. It is very irritating that passenger cannot enter destination during driving (critical when you want to find restaurant while driving at highway)
3. OEM XM Satellite radio - costly, but works flawlessly.

I hope this information will help to avoid somebody troubles I had (spent quite a lot of time on this!)

2010 Highlander Limited w/ Premium JBl Navigation and Radio

If this is what your car was outfitted with when you bought it from the dealer (JBL Premium Navigation and Radio) then the following aprts are what you need in order to get XM radio.

86180-0W032 = XM Receiver (About $190 US)

PT546-48090 = XM Fit Kit (About $95 US)

Installation = ($90 US from a company that specializes in installing radios and such)

It works! No conflicts at all. They do have to take the drivers seat out. It uses the antenna that came with your navigation, so they don't have to ADD another antenna. Any questions, post a reply and I will try to answer.

Hope this helps anyone that had as much trouble figuring this out as I did.

:-)

yes, in short OEM ipod and OEM xm is not compatible. It's even said it in the manual. go with the non OEM ipod if you want OEM xm.

No ipod here so...

I do not have the ipod adaptor so I cannot comment on that, but I know there is an AUX port so I can connect it there if I wish. I like satellite radio though honestly. Let someone else "mix it" for me. I never can come up with a good playlist anyway.

The iPod adaptor is exatly the issue. OEM version is not compatible with OEM XM (they use same connector according to the dealer) Of course XM+NAV won't create any conflict. It came "XM Ready" Aux port is a bad alternative as you cannot control iPod during driving (that is what iPod interface for) With Aux port you have to select playlist, then listen it all - no skip, no change, no stop etc. unless you take risk to playing with iPod itself during driving which is very dangerous, in my opinion.

I only posted because upon calling the dealer "Toyota" regarding this issue they were not sure as to what parts I needed in order to get XM radio. I sort of figured it out for myself and now I am letting any one else know that has this SUV. Hopefully they will not have to go through the same tribulations as I had to regarding wether or not certain parts are "needed/work with" the equipment installed when purchased.

See my other post in this thread regarding parts needed.

Hi, what is number 2 above? Is it true that you cannot change your destination while driving? I've been in that situation but I wasn't sure if I missed something in the manual. It was very irritating I agree. What is the screen freeze and how does it help?

Welcome to the club of annoyed Toyota navigation users Yes, you cannot enter destination, find your favorite restaurant while driving on highway or enter points of interest. You have to stop first. This little interface helps inserted between radio and nav to freeze screen and fool the nav system the car is not moving. Once you enter all your details, just click same button again to "unfreeze" the screen. The installation is a breeze and it works like a charm

I must have agreed with you, but at the same time my happy ending I posted was too early
I found hard way, while traveling to Orlando, Florida that my dealer has disconnected GPS antenna to connect XM radio. Unfortunately, I noticed it too late in the game and could not return XM back to the dealer. The car audio shop in Florida who replaced my awful Toyo Open Country A20 tires (see other thread about A20 tires) discovered that GPS antenna was just in the air XM radio and GPS satellite are using same connector and either one should connect to the back of the radio. The problem is that both cannot be connected at the same time.
I know for sure that people did connect XM Satellite radio and GPS antenna at the same time. What are you guys doing about this difference in antenna of XM and GPS? Are you using some kind of splitter/merger for the signal or do you cut wires to merge both antennas into one with single connector or do you use GPS antenna to catch XM signal as well? Is there schema how it should be connected properly, so nav and xm work at the same time?
I learned how to remove this freaking panels in highlander, so I will not go back to dealership as they barely understand how this stuff works. Shame on Toyota.

Thanks for the help,

Shimon

thanks for the info! will look into this. did you install this yourself?

we also have nav and xm, we've never had a problem with using any/both at the same time. the dealer ordered a vehicle with both already installed, so they had nothing to do with installation, and the xm was already working by the time we took delivery.
