Any advice on what to look for during the test drive, and any thoughts on what might convince me on the Highlander vs the Traverse?
Recommendations on trim level, options to go for and options to avoid, negotiating tips and/or current incentives that Toyota/TFS are offering? Is buyig new a must?
Any advice and/or opinions are welcome!

I just recently did the comparsion route and will give you some of my findings and thoughts. I owned a RAV4 V6 which though a very good vehicle I wanted something a little larger and more refined. I checked out a lot of vehicles and the Highlander seemed to fit my needs better than others and I liked it best. I guess it shouldn't be surprising since more than a few people joke the Highlander is the RAV4 on steroids.
Traverse and Highlander both have V6 power, tons of features, get similar epa mileage and I personally like the syling of both. Now where my research into the Traverse stopped is when I found out actually how big it really is, it's 25 inches longer than the Highlander and about 2-3 inches wider, too lazy to convert it to metric for ya but think unibody Tahoe sized vehicle.
I ruled out the Traverse quickly finding out how large it is since I don't need all that space and it would barely fit in my garage. I am only driving 2-3 people around usually, but if I was driving around 5 or more the Traverse would of been the one I seriously considered. Overall a very nice vehicle that gets good mileage and well haul a larger family comfortable. The GMC Acadia which is GMC version of the Traverse is a bit more expensive but is about 4 inches shorter.
I bought the Highlander SE because it seemed to get me the best mix of features I needed and also wanted. The Base can be optioned very well but I was coming from a loaded RAV4 Limited and wanted to spoil myself but didn't have the budget for the Limited model. As for buying new I would say in the US it's a great time since we have zero percent financing and I feel Toyota has some huge dealer incentives that help sell the vehicle for a lot of people right around invoice. One thing to consider is say you find two Highlanders one an 08 and the other brand new, if you can get zero percent financing on the new but the used is at 5-7% financing that's going to be a huge bump in payments that may make the new one as affordable as the used.
Let us know your findings and possible what requirements in a new vehicle you will need so we can hone in our advice.
