Rear Tailgate Window Question

I picked up a new Highlander Limited last week and was wondering. If I was to transport something really long like a plant and it stuck out of the rear tailgate window, is it safe to drive with it open? It has dampeners but will it slam shut if I was traveling 45mph? Just wondering if anyone has done this.

If it was me I'd place a towel on top of the load, lower the tailgate window down to it, then with a light rope fasten the window in place through the tow hooks underneath the bumper. I think the rear windshield wiper assembly is strong enough to take the load. At least that's what I'd do.

I have driven with the window opened and some 2x4's sticking out. Afraid to go more than 45 also and I did not have to go more than a few miles. Good thing, since the Nanny Toyota keep warning me the whole way, and would not shut off the interior lights or headlights until it was closed.

Thanks. This was exactly the info I was looking for. So by staying under 45mph, the tailgate window didn't have any problems staying all the way open?

Yep, at least not for a short distance (<5 miles).

I did it once and found exhaust fumes coming in the cabin, which is very dangerous (ie. carbon monoxide). Suggest you keep windows cracked and fresh air on high out of vents on while transporting with rear window open.

Another options is to hook one end of bungee to the strap on the inside of the hatch door, and the other end to the stem of the wiper. Haven't tried it myself, but might work.
