USA Replace '08 High Nav. screen- Broken

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has recommedations on what to do if my OEM Nav. touch screen (The one that moves when you put in a CD), no longer is touch sensitive.

I think I damaged it, due to sticking my portable Garmin GPS unit onto it and removing too, in frustration. This device is not user friendly at all, and I must say personally the $350.00 Garmin 1490T is clearly superior in terms of blue tooth and Navigation. Maybe the language and function is translated from Japanese into English and that is the problem?

Anyway, The problem is that a lot of other features on this vehicle also use the Nav display, like Bluetooth, audio options, etc and so I do need the touch screen sensitivity.

The Toyota dealer at first offered to replace it at No Charge, then found some damage caused by the Garmin cup, sticking, and said that Fujitsu would not warrantee this screen due to some minor internal "circular fractures of the inner membrane layers" etc. of the screen. They wanted about $1500-2000 just for this Nav. Screen replacement.. What should I do??

I see that there are Chinese suppliers for the whole unit, but no have no confidence there. Then there is a Rosen but not really OEM...Where can I get a remanufactured one of these?? Or a less expensive new one? Help?

I have one of the Chinese units, just delivered. The big problem I am having is the wiring. My Highlander has the JBL system. It appears the replacement unit wiring is made for plug-N-play with the BASIC radio. The JBL system has more wires and different plugs. I did do a test fitting. It will look GREAT when done.

USA Navigation SCreen

Thanks a lot Bobert for your comments about this Chinese Nav. unit. Interesting. I saw prices on Ebay or a nother web site (Jewellet?)for around $300-$400. Did you have an OEM one in it before? Is that why you bought the Chinese one? As a replacement? I would put in an OEM Toyata unit if it were less than $1000.00. But they want much more.

I have a Ltd. Highlander 2008 model, which I believe has JBL Sound/Speakers too. I personally would have this done by an elctronics specialist since I am a complete dummy with auto electronics. I just hope my wife (She is the one who drives this car, primarily) does not get really pissed at me for not paying for this high $$$$ unit. We do have bluetooth thru the Garmin GPS...Thank God.

fongshr, you can't blame nobody but yourself for the damage, and it will cost you... Your best bet is to buy used OEM nav on fleebay like item # 190377587567 (don't forget 8% Bing cash back!) or from a junk yard. Then either swap display or whole unit and sell old NAV for parts. I'd think that unit with damaged screen could be sold at list for $500. Hint... make pictures of your damaged unit for ebay auction before removing it from the car.

USA Garmin VS OEM Toyota Nav.-

Thanks for the info. Not sure I want the used stuff right now. I understand that it is supllied by Fujitsu.... The dealer actually offered it new to me (Remanuf?) at $1200.00 approx. as a special "insurance" type replacement.

I have to say as far as "blame" that I had absolutley no idea that sticking the Garmin mount onto the LCD would permanently damage this touch function or any function, after only 1-2 times. I do not know how they are put together or how they work. I assumed it was either hard plastic or glass panel.

It sure seemed like such a "logical " place to mount the rubber cup, so convenient, especially when you are in traffic, and totally frazzled from how poorly the OEM Toyota CD Navigation System really operates in the real, world, as compared with Garmin logic. Just so much more user friendly and simple and very thoughtful to use. And it is so much cheaper!!!! --$300.00 VS $3000.00 ??

I must say that never again will I buy a Toyota OEM Nav. system, for sure!

You can get so much more now with these $300.00 Garmin type Nav. systems! Bluetooth, weather, traffic etc., And they are portable. I guess I answered my own question about replacing this beast! It shocked me! So did the ridiculous price!
