Canada Front Tire Wear

08 Highlander Sport - OE Tires are Toyo Open Country. The Front Tires are shot, and there are just around 40,000 KM. Shoulders - both inside and outside on both Fronts have worn terribly. Anybody else have an issue - Dealer says alignment was fine, but of course charged me for the work. Now I have to buy atleast 2 new, and am having a hard time finding anything other then OE replacements at $306 per or Bridgestones, which are cheaper but am told won't even wear as well as the Toyos. Anythoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like your tires were over-inflated if the sides of your tires were more worn than the middle of the tire. How often do you check the tire pressure? It'd be wise to check them every week or so.

Over/Under?

If I understand correctly, the shoulder wear on both sides is an under inflation issue and I challenged the dealer a few times about the tire pressure. I do check it regularly, and sitting at 32psi cold always seemed like it was low, but that was where I was told to leave it. I did have the TPMS go off twice, and all 4 tires where leaking, so the dealer set the inflation to 40 psi and told me to run them for 6 weeks at that pressure and then comeback and see them, as they claimed none of the tires/rims were leaking, and thought it might be a bad TPMS. I have another relative who has an 08 sport, and has the same issue with wear. I'm wondering if this is just a weird conincidence as our driving styles are pretty much opposites or if there are others that are experiencing similar issues.

I had same issue. Consensus seems to be TOYO tires are not that good and to expect 40-50000 KM. That is not good, but that is the way it is. Also, I have BRIDGESTONES now and its worse. As there is limited choices on highlander 09, I would not buy a highlander again for this issue.

To use a common expression, that's like throwing out the baby with the bath water. I don't say that to be nasty, it's just that there really are a large number of tires available (at least for the 17" wheels) and there are a number of inflation and/or alignment issues that the OP and others have not clarified or otherwise explored.

Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles. Your tire pressure is on the inside of the drivers door. Do not come flying around corners with the truck (it is not a car). In the winter check regularly as tire pressure can drop 10 psi over night, especially if there is a drop in temperature (a lot). On average, if doing a combination of highway and city, you should be getting around 50,000 miles on all tires and in km is a lot more. Rotation is very important. Google " how to get the most tread life out of your tires" and you will see a wealth of information. Do not listen to the dealers about tire pressure, again look @ the inside of the door for the correct pressure. You could probably be safe @ 35 psi. I do not think it is the quality of the tire, but how the vehicle is driven. Frequent acceleration & stopping will hurt the tires, etc.

Today as I was washing the vehicle, I checked the tire pressure. 32 psi is what the vehicle should be at. If you are getting premature wear, then have the vehicle checked for suspension parts including the front struts. I would get more than one opinion as someone may be trying to sell you a bag of good. Rotate the tires every 5K miles.

There is a whole lot of information on the tiers on another thread. There seems to be a new Brigestone Ecopia which has good ratings and are available in HL size for a change. If not you can go a size up or down and go for Bridgestone Alenzas and they are the best i have seen so far.

Kudos to Bridgestone Ecopias

I keep my tires at 36 psi and the tread is even but close to beng worn out at 16,000 miles. I also rotate all 5 tires. I keep looking for new replacement tires hoping to see better selection.

Check Tire Rack. There are a few options for 245/55/19s.

To anyone that has premature wear on the tires and you are doing all the right things, I would suggest you call the tire manufacturer. Your tires may be defective. Not sure. Start with the dealer. I have always had between 45K-55K (miles) on all my tires. I can not imagine tires wearing out that early. My wife is the most agressive driver with Pep Boys Tires. We already have 40K on them and they were only rotated 2X, will need to rotate a 3rd time. They still have about 10k left. Something is wrong here with these tires that are wearing out that early. You should get at least 40K out of tires.

If you have the Toyo A20 Open Country, those tires are just horrible. I would be surprised if it last more than 20,000 miles. Back in 2008, 2009 there were almost no choice but to replace with either the Toyo A20 or Bridgestone HL400, both of which are horrible. However today there are many good choices out there, including Toyo Open Country HT. Check Tirerack as Subaryota had mentioned. Also, Goodyear Assurance CS TripleTred All-Season. 740 Tire wear rating with a 65,000 mile warranty?!?
