Problems with Bluetooth Recognizing Voice Commands

While I was raised in NYC, and maybe have a slight accent, I do speak with proper grammar, and because of my job do quite a bit of public speaking. Nonetheless, I am really struggling with the bluetooth in my '10 highlander non-nav JBL system. It frequently misunderstands numbers, voice commands (i.e. confuses "confirm" and "cancel", many different numbers, etc). i am wondering if anyone else was faced with this and able to have anything done with about it. I also have BT in my Mazda6 and have no issues with that.

I am curious if the microphone adjustment that people speak about would help.

The voice commands on the Highlander are totally useless. Wen I had a Honda they worked great but the system on the Toyota is awful.
