09 Highlander nav unit installation problem

Purchased used 09 Highlander and wanted to upgrade the 6 CD changer to the navigation unit. Installed Toyota OEM unit but one plug input on back of unit is different size to original harness plug. This is the microphone and some steering wheel control inputs. Cant find the plug anywhere (tyco 24 pin). Has anyone installed a factory nav unit and found the plug and pin identification anywhere? Thanks.

Where were you able to purchase a factory nav unit?

Toyota OEM nav unit

There are a number available on ebay. I checked and verified Toyota part # (86120-48F00) and year with dealer and got exact unit that they put in new 09 Highlanders with the navigation option.

Hmm.... And you can just pop these in and they'll work as if you got them in the package from the factory?

Almost????? Depending on what comes with it from e-bay you may have to buy the navigation map DVD ($60-$150) and the gps antenna ($50-$200). If the unit has the same trim and year as what you have in your highlander then yes it is just a matter of taking your old unit out and installing the new one. BUT a lot depends on your existing radio/cd unit and the features that you have as to what unit you need and what will work with the new nav unit (eg. do you have XM, voice activation, steering wheel controls etc). You may also face the problem I am having with one of the harness plugs needing to be re-wired.

By the way I got the new nav unit, DVD map and antenna from e-bay for less than $500. So shop wisely if you go this route.

Are you sure this is new Toyota factory in-dash nav for this price? If so, you are miraculously lucky

No doubt about it. The unit works perfectly except for the microphone and wheel mode controls which is the plug I am looking for.

What trim level is your 09 HL? Base or sport?

It is the LTD model. Seems to have all the bells and whistles except the navigation unit.

I am considering doing this for my 2010 Highlander Hybrid. If I understand your situation you currently have the new unit installed and everything works except for the steering wheel controls and the microphone. Am I understanding correctly?

It also sounds like you are looking for the pinout for each of the versions of the stereos so that you can figure out how to crack open the connector and make your own connections. Right?

Did you get any documentation with your new stereo?

If you take the existing connector that connects to the current steering wheel controls, can you use a multimeter to figure out what wires are for the volume, what ones are for the mode, what ones are for the channel change? Am I makeing any sense with these questions?

The issue was finding the right plug for the back of the nav unit. After a lot of frustration and forum reading I did find the plug and was able to order it from Toyota (part# 90980-12404, 24 pin connector). With this I was able to get the mic working which also made the steering wheel controls work for speech. Because at the time I did not have any wiring diagrams I could not get the back up camera to work thru the nav unit screen.

I have since found an excellent site that provides diagrams for any make and year and was able to get the diagrams that also identify the pin locations and the wiring colors and IDs for $9.90......well worth it. That site by the way is http://www.freeautomechanic.com/wiringproblems%202.html you will need it if you do want to do it yourself.

Now that I have the diagrams I will rewire the plugs to the nav unit wiring and everything should work as OEM. Will update when completed.
