I recently ordered the RS3200 Plus/GBS (glass breakage sensor) (Part
PT398-48081) to install in my 2010 Highlander Limited. Following are some notes on the install that I did and also a request for assistance.
This part retails for 149.00 for gas models (note there is a different, more expensive part for Hybrids -
PT398-48082) - here is information on the parts:
"The VIP RS3200Plus (Vehicle Intrusion Protection) is a complete vehicle security system with alarm and glass breakage sensor for vehicles that already have keyless entry with remote lock/unlock. When equipped with the VIP RS3200, the vehicle’s security system is activated immediately if the glass is broken or if forced entry of a side door (or the trunk) is attempted. Includes a wide range of security and convenience features including: automatic rearming and relocking, door ajar warning, interior light activation, panic alarm, rolling code technology and disabling of the starter. Note: This kit can be installed as an RS3200 Plus alarm system or a GBS add on to an existing factory theft deterrent system. There are two separate sets of installation instructions for either application being installed, RS3200 Plus(V5) or GBS (V2). The RS3200 Plus applies to gas models only. It requires vehicle to have immobilizer feature to be installed. Immobilizer is standard on Limited and Sport models and optional on the base model. The GBS applies to both gas and hybrids. GBS add on requires vehicle to have factory theft deterrent system already"
The part I used
PT398-48081 can currently be found for $40.25 at

or for $43.58 at
http://www.toyotapart.com/Highlander...y_Systems.html - note s/h is extra of course for both sites.
The part I ordered arrived sealed in a factory box; however, there were no instructions. I found and used the following instructions on the web:
http://www.trdsparks.com/install/PT398-48081inst.pdf and I will refer to the steps noted in these instructions.
Note that there are basically two parts to the install - 1) installing a ground wire from the junction box on the driver's side to a ground terminal, and 2) installing a y-cable, control unit, and microphone on the passenger's side behind the glove box.
Here are my notes and the issues I encountered:
Step 1 - vehicle disassembly.
REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE!
The step covers and cowl covers both came up fairly easily on both sides - I tried using a popsicle stick as I do not have a "nylon panel removal tool " as called for in the instructions. I located the clips, but could not easily get them to disengage, usually one would pop up easily, then I fed my hand under to unclip the remaining ones. Don't forget the plastic nut holding both cowl covers. The glove box was fairly easy as well - 2 bolts and three screws, then unplug two connectors to pull the entire glove box out.
Step 2 - wire harness installation - driver's side.
This is where I had my only real issue and where I need some assistance. To locate the driver's side junction box, look for the area where the fuses are, that is the bottom of the box. The 26P connector is plugged into the back of this box, at the top, on the side nearest the steering wheel. Note there are 4 connectors at the top of the junction box, and a few more at the bottom. I believe the 26P is the one at the top nearest the steering wheel. I could not locate any markings on the connector or the junction box indicating "26P", but it was the only one that matched the connector as shown in fig 2-2. This connector has three rows of wires, with 6 spaces on the top (if you hold it with the locking clip up as shown in fig 2-3), then a middle row of 11 spaces, and a bottom row of 9 spaces (a group of 5, then a group of 4). NOTE - this refers to the wire side of the connector, i.e. where the colored wires enter the connector, NOT the side where the connector plugs into the junction box.
The instructions indicate to find the blue wire, and note that it is to be found on the middle row, second from the left (again, looking at the wire side of the connector, above the group of 5 spaces on the bottom row); however, for me, this wire was lt brown in color rather than blue.

The only blue wire on my connector was on the top row in the fourth position from the left. Additionally, my connector appeared to have many more wires than are indicated in the drawing (for instance, my top row had 5 of 6 spaces filled with wires, in the diagram, they show 3 of 6 filled).
For reference, here are the wires that were in my 26P connector (wire side, lock clip at top):
TOP ROW (6 spaces):
grey, white, lt. brown, blue, no wire, lt. green
MIDDLE ROW (11 spaces):
pink, lt. brown, yellow, lt. green, red, no wire, no wire, purple, grey, black, no wire
BOTTOM ROW (9 spaces - group of 5 then group of 4):
yellow, red, green, lt. blue, grey, then green, pink, yellow, lt. brown
To remove any wire, you need to release the terminal lock (step 2(b)), which requires a small pick or jeweler's screwdriver, you might be able to use a needle or paper clip. This lock pops up, but not much, only a millimeter or two.
The wire in question (either the blue wire in row 1 or the second wire in row 2) is to be pulled from the connector and then taped to the wire bundle with electrical tape (step 2(d)). Then the wire harness from the kit is to inserted into its place. Note that the wire connector has a notch or key on it, and only fits one way into the connector. Make sure you line it up with the slot on the connector. The lead will bend/break if you apply to much force. Once inserted fully, push down on the terminal lock to hold it in place (step 2(f)).
Wire tie the new wire harness in place as shown and connect to the ground terminal near the front bottom of the driver door.
Step 3 - wire harness installation (passenger's side)
This part went exactly as specified in the instructions - no issues. The short end of the "Y" cable is connected to the existing plug (step 3(d)), the long end goes down for the microphone connection, the bottom of the "Y" cable connects to the new control unit, which is mounted to a bracket and then connects to the upper right of the glove box area (step 4(d)). DO NOT FORGET TO SET THE SENSITIVITY AS INDICATED IN STEP 4(a)!!! Mine came from the factory set to 0.
Mount the microphone to the backside of the glove box cover, making sure you don't cover up the microphone. Connect the long end of the Y cable to the microphone and install the cover.
Wire tie all cables as shown, then reinstall the glove box and covers.
I then reconnected the negative battery cable and then expected a trip to the dealership to finish step 7 - registration with Techstream. However, when I tested the unit by tapping the tip of a key to the passenger side window, the alarm went off. I assume that the Limited already has the "Security System" value set to ON as it comes with an alarm/engine immobilizer already installed (?)
I then installed the window stickers and tested everything else as shown in the accessory function check and vehicle function check sections of the instructions, and all seems to be well.
So my questions are as follows:
1) Which wire should I be grounding on the driver's side? The blue wire from position 4 of the top row on the 26P connector OR the lt. brown wire from position 2 of the middle row on the 26P connector??? I could not locate a wiring diagram or schematic that would indicate which is correct. Does anyone have access to this information? Does anyone know what is being grounded with this process?
2) As it seems that the GBS is working correctly (along with everything else I was able to check), do I need to go to the dealership for the Techstream registration?
All in all, I am satisfied with this installation, just want to make sure I am grounding the correct wire. This is my first time pulling off body panels and such, and it all went fairly well, save for the wire confusion! The price was very reasonable and I could probably do it all again in 30-40 minutes now that I have been through it once.
If anyone has any questions, or can provide me any information, please let me know.
