Talking Programing a transponder key

Hey, I'm new to the community and have a few questions. I was just wondering if you guys know how to program a 2008 Highlander key, since my son is driving soon I want to give him a key, and the dealers give OUTRAGEOUS prices for the keys I'm thinking about going on ebay ordering a key getting it cut by a locksmith and then programing, but the only problem is I don't know how to.

Regards Brian

Hello, Brian, and welcome to Toyota Nation!

You can check out this link to a past thread about remote programming and see if it answers your question. If not, you may also want to use the forum's search tool to find other past threads covering the remote programming.

Hi Brian. to the 'Nation'.
I believe I saw a sign in the local Home Hardware store saying that they cut transponder keys. I'll have to verify that the next time I go there.
Not sure if that includes programming it as well. If you have one in your neighbourhood, perhaps it may be worth a call.

Peter

Thanks for the response, but I think I've given up on my search. I might have to go to the dealer and just pay for it. But thanks and sorry for such a late reply.

I ended up buying an OEM transponder key on Ebay ($20) as well and found several local locksmiths that could program it. Not sure why it would be hard to find in Canada??? I did a Google search in my are and came up with Locksmith Central Inc, which was really just a locator of mobile locksmiths in your area that has the ability to program transponder keys.

Also as far as I have been able to find out, the keys and key fobs have to be programmed with a special tool/program plug into your car, and cannot manually be programmed with a series of steps (i.e. close the door, insert key in ignition 6 times etc...) so don't pay extra for instructions

Good Luck

Sacfitz
