Can't unlock doors?

I just traded my '09 Highlander base for a 2010 Highlander Hybrid Limited. It has a SmartKey, and I can't get the damn thing to unlock anything but the driver's door. I even did the programming in the manual, and the MFD implies that the feature is changed to do all doors, but it doesn't (I've cycled through it several times already).

I also can't get the interior unlock buttons to do anything. So, if I need to unlock other doors, I either have to shift into and out of park, or reach over and flip the lock. WTF?

Anyone have any ideas other than going to the dealership?

OK, I figured out that the SmartKey wasn't working because it's in the car - weird that you can't unlock the doors when you're in the car (other than the driver's door).

Same for the unlock button. That's incredibly annoying. I don't want to have to go to the dealer just for this, but I guess I'll have to. How the heck do you let people out of the car? Shift into drive, then back to Park? So stupid.

Just did a test. Sitting in the vehicle with engine off, I can lock all doors with SmartKey remote but only unlock the driver's door. With the engine running and transmission in 'D' I can unlock ALL doors with the lock/unlock button on the driver's door. Do not have to put transmission into 'P'. NOTE: The only change I made to the programming when I got my '09 HL Ltd was for ALL doors to unlock when the door handle is touched. Prior to that change, only the driver's door unlocked.

Thanks, man, that's really helpful. I wish I could do anything I want with that unlock button, though, as I could do that with my '09 base Highlander. I'll have to ask the dealership when I go in for my first oil change in a while.

The SmartKey FOB has two separate systems.

the SmartKey part allows you to open the doors from the outside by touching the door handle and start the car without inserting a key.

The FOB buttons are a separate system.

Factory setting is One press opens the drivers door. press again and it opens all doors.

I am assuming you pressed twice from the inside to unlock all doors?????

You can change the setting for the SmartKey system yourself (instructions in the owners manual) to open all doors when you touch the door handle.

The dealer has to do the change for the FOB buttons to open all doors with one press.

Yeah, I was trying to unlock all doors from the inside, though I did try the same thing from outside the car (but near one of the doors, so the SmartKey part of the remote was in play). The post above yours was really helpful in clarifying how it works (the manual didn't do it for me).

I just find it odd that I can't unlock the doors from the FOB or the door unlock button in certain situations while in the car. I get not letting me lock myself in (or let me by double pressing lock, as some makers allow), but not restricting unlock functionality. This key allows me to lock myself in, but not unlock all the doors in some situations.
