Hi, I saw somebody in this forum with a HL had a smoked rear tail lights, I just wanted to know which one is better, the film that you buy that has been cut already or D.I.Y.? Anybody had one, because I asked this fella with HL and he never replied. Just give your opinions. thanks!
Why do you want to smoke the lights, isn't it defeating the purpose of the lights by reducing the distance which other operators can see you?
My thoughts exactly, plus it is probably illegal. All lights must meet a minimum standard as to the level of light they output. Adding any kind of cover would defeat that, in my opinion.

Maybe he is doing because he wants to. Maybe because it might look nicer. I see VW's with smoked lights all the time adn it looks great on the right car.
He didnt ask an opinion about safety he asked about the best way to go about. i would take it to a shop myself and have them custom fit the film themselves for a much better look

pre-cut ones you can remove at anytime. diy is usually light sanding then sprayed on. it's totally up to you. if you want to just do certain section of the tail light, i say go with the spray style
Okay, in order to prevent more derogatory remarks for the OP and reignite a flame war, here is a link to the California DMV code regarding taillights. Also, anyone wanting to tint their taillights in California should be aware that there is also a provision in the vehicle code that states that you MAY NOT alter any vehicle light equipment unless it is D.O.T. approved equipment, which tinted tail lights are not. And, this is NOT a fix-it ticket -- there is a fine and you cannot just remove the lenses and pay a $10 administrative fee. Thanks.
