Pump oil out oil change test

Did an oil change today on my '08 Highlander and was curious if, when I used that screw in plastic plug that comes with the Purolator cartridge and a clear plastic hose to reach the my oil container, the oil pump would pump the oil out the drain hose.

With the engine warm and at idle speed it took just 55 seconds for it to pump all 6 quarts of oil out of the engine. Now some might remember those oil commercials a while back, where they drain all the oil out of a bunch of engines and run them flat out. After about 5 or ten minutes they all lock up except one, and, of course, it's the one that had use the oil of the company that was paying for the commercial.

The point was that, for a period of time, oil safely coats all the parts inside the engine, even if you drain it.

Well, that's life on the edge. Just could not resist my curiosity as to how things work! Don't know if I'd do it this way all the time though, vrs. the good old drain plug.

I had Accord while back. It developed faulty crankshaft seal and lost all the oil on highway twice. Wife actually drove it to nearest exit at hw speed. There was no damage. The engine had Slick50 treatment prior. At the time of oil loss it had BG additive. One of them did the trick

Well seeing how the pump pickup does not sit on the bottom of the pan, then you are not actually pumping all the oil out of the engine. In addition, it is not wise to pump the oil pump dry. Why would you even consider this. It really doesnt take that long to crack the bolt, and let it drain, probably faster then it pumps anyway. Bottom line is I wouldnt want your engine anymore.

Interesting experiment, but not worth the risk.
