The passenger side mirror glass has cracked in my 2009 HL Sport and I'd like to replace it. Have no idea how this happened--the mirror moves and the housing has no damage so I hope I can replace just the glass itself(going to call the dealer tomorrow to see if they have it). If someone has done this job, I'd appreciate any tips--for example how do you remove the old glass and attach the repacement glass. Thanks!

I'd be curious to see if this could be classified as a manufacturer's defect and covered under warranty. I would also be surprised if it were just as simple as replacing the glass. Please keep us posted. Thanks.

If it is not covered under warranty, and I doubt my dealer would allow it, I have used a replacement mirror product similar to this company's in the past with no problems...
When cleaning out the old mirror glass wear really good leather gloves as glass splinters are no fun.... Or you could take it to a local body shop and let them install it....
Thanks for the replies. It's not covered under the warranty(I didn't think it was). My local dealer will do it for $112 (says would be less but I have the heated mirrors). I also found out that my car insurance will cover it but there is a $50 deductible. Unfortunately that would put a claim on my record which could have an effect when my policy comes up for renewal so I don't think I will do that. I'm still hoping to hear from someone who has actually removed the mirror glass from the plastic housing and can explain how to do it.

Search function is your friend. See the following for the same job on the 1st gen HL. The instruction should be similar for 2nd gen HL. Good luck!

By coincidence, I was speaking with my insurance company this morning regarding my policy renewal and asked about putting a deductable on the Comprehensive part of my insurance. I asked if I ever had a claim under 'Comprehensive' would that affect my overall policy cost and the answer was NO. Only a claim under 'Collision' would possibly affect the rate. Check with your insurance company. Not sure if it works the same in the USA. If such a claim won't affect the future rate, I'd get the dealer to do it. Clean and easy!

A while back I was curious how to get the glass off so I could get behind the mirror to lubricate any part that might cause a noise in cold weather. At the dealer the service guy call up document RM000002XW0002X. They are the instructions for taking the glass off. If you stop by your guy might run off a copy for you. They are not the clearest illustrations, but the important thing is that they seem to say the glass can be removed from the front.
I've never done it, since no sounds have developed. Sort of been hoping that someone else with the noise would post some photos of how to do it. Danger is you could break something if you don't do it right. They say to tape lower edge of mirror shell, tape front of flat blade screwdriver, tip top edge of mirror back into shell, then (and here's the vague, magical, part of the instructions) "disengage the two claws on the upper edge of rear of mirror, that hold the mirror on. Unplug the mirror, if heated and replace with the new one. The guy said they break them all the time trying to remove unbroken glass. Hope this helps.
Thanks Cashmachine, Peterk9 and Photon Dreams for your information. I decided to let the dealer do it so I stopped in late this morning and had parts order the mirror--his computer shows that it will arrive with tomorrow's parts order and they will call me to bring my Highlander in to install it. Also, they are giving me 10% off on both the part and the labor so it will be $100 total. Parts guy mentioned that occasionally one of the mechanics will break a new mirror replacement while installing it--too much pressure applied to snap it into the housing. As for my insurance, they would only say that a claim wouldn't necessarily result in a rate increae, but it could, depending on past record, nature of claim etc. Each company apparently has its own system.
I broke the tabs removing it the wrong way when replacing the puddle lamp (pulling out as hard as I can with my hands), I gotta get it replaced too. I think if you search you can get the glass heated mirror for around $50. Replacing is very simple. There are 4 clips and you just snap it in.
