Anyone take Highlanders on the Beach?

I was on the Outer Banks of NC a few weeks ago...

I saw a bunch of trucks and SUVs out on the beach via the beach access points and wanted to join them. Anyways the signs say you need 4WD and to let air out of the tires...

So is AWD gonna get me stuck in the sand and do you really have to let air out of the tires?

Anyone with this experience?
