I thought a newer model was considered a new gen model when it was redesigned? Sure seems like it's just a cosmetic update to me as the body style (in general) looks the same as does most of the interior other than some minor changes (like split 3rd row). Did they replace the whole engine/drivetrain? What am I missing that would qualify the 2011 as a 3rd gen?
Not picking on you OP, I'm just curious because I honestly don't know what changed that would qualify it as a 3rd gen (or what qualifies a model as a new generation in general).

The 2011 is the same thing as a 2010, just with a different, squintier nose. Therefore it is still 2nd gen.

When buying my 2010 HL on Aug 24, I asked, should I wait, new 2011 stuff? I asked what changed? I was told virtually nothing, based on that response from the dealer, I say the 2011 is still Gen-2 until something radical happens.
Ok.. good deal. I guess one could argue either way. I was thinking "generation" referred to each time the body was redesigned and/or the vehicle changed its overall appearance. The 2011 is the 3rd major body redesign since the HL first came out in 2001. I think everyone would agree that the three distinct HL versions were 2001, 2008, and now 2011.
Its not a major redesign. The difference between the 1st and 2nd gen is major. The difference between 2010 and 2011 is a little more makeup.

I'd have to agree that the latest Highlanders are simply full of cosmetic changes and not a redesign. When a bona fide redesign comes along I'm all for a 3rd Gen forum, till then 2nd Gen is fine IMO. Thanks! BTW, it's great to be back!

2011 was minor. There wasn't a MAJOR change in the bodystyle. Just changes that could be done replacing some parts here and there without that much involvement in changing manufacturing or much r&d.
Major would be when they do something to the overall chassis of the vehicle [Cosmetic, structural]. This would require alot of r&d and MAJOR changes in the manufacturing process of the vehicle.
