2008 JBL Subwoofer

So I have searched and searched and searched and searched for any information on my 2008 Highlander Sport's JBL stereo and factory subwoofer. I'm not getting any luck whatsoever. Crutchfield doesn't even recognize the hatch door speaker in the Highlander Sport. Frustrating....

So I'm pretty sure the rear hatch door (5th door...you know.....the back door that lifts up) is busted. It's making some awful noise. It took some lengthy research just to find out that the speaker was an 8" subwoofer (I hope....not even that source was reliable). I have discovered lots of threads on people replacing the front and rear passenger door speakers, but nothing on the back hatch sub.

Does anyone know of a thread where this is addressed? Or if someone can just run me through how to remove it that would be great too. I need to get to the sub to look at it and see if it actually needs replaced or if a wire is loose or something, but I don't want to take the panel off without knowing how to do it. And do I need to remove the whole panel or just over the speaker? It appears the grill over the speaker comes off but I have tried (not very hard) to remove it and it's not budging. The plastic is easy to scuff up and crack and break and all the other stuff that happens when working with stereo equipment on an unfamiliar vehicle.

Thank you for any help in advance

Yes that link was very helpful as far as finding OEM parts.....funny how it still doesn't tell you this size of the woofer. What is Toyota hiding? lol. I'm wanting to replace it with a different brand because you can find them for much cheaper than what the list price is (as long as it's 8").

Thanks for the link. It was very helpful. Still need a diagram or something on how to replace it. Any other ideas?

Thanks again!

You very well may have to disassemble your rear door panel, remove the sub, and measure carefully the available space. Then you could use Cructchfields site to shop subwoofer demensions.( I would shop prices, crutchfield is often TOO high)

If your sub is blown, isn't it under warranty?

If you do this, please post your discoveries, with pics please!

Stock hatch sub is dual voice coil. If you're keeping the JBL amp, make sure you pick an 8" sub with DVC.

You'll probably have to make an adapter plate using plastic, plywood, mdf.... by tracing the old and new sub on it and cutting it. Mount the new sub on the adapter plate and mount the adapter plate to the hatch as if it were the old sub. And, the adapter plate will give you some depth as the hatch is pretty shallow. Slim/shallow 8" sub should fit no problem. Break out the tape measure for anything else.

You can also soundproof the rear hatch:
factory sub can sound good
