My wife took our 2010 Highlander in for an oil change and tire rotation in response to coupons sent to us from the dealer. Looking through the paperwork, there is a remark that states "Caution-Class B Service declined." What does that mean? My wife pretty much talked to no one at the dealership other than to drop off and pick up. Can someone post a list or link to what "Class B Service" is? Thanks
JMSinMD will likely know. Hopefully he'll chime in for you.
Every dealership is different, they make up packages to sell additional service work (with most of it being checking vs. actual doing).
An "A" service is typically oil change and tire rotation. A "B" service would likely be an "A" service + air filter. A "C" service.....etc, etc, etc.
I myself make a spread sheet for service based on 5,000 mile increments which I follow to a T, I keep track of 6 cars in the immediate family and can rely on my spread sheets to help me keep track of required service work. If you want when I get home I can copy and paste what I follow or send you a copy of the excel spread sheet.
That must be one special air filter. The difference in the cost of the Class B Service and what I paid for what you're saying was a Class A service was $275. I'll stick to it's a scam.
f you have a spreadsheet that pertains to my 2010 Highlander and you are offering it up, email it to me at terp84alum@yahoo.com. Thanks
I would not say it is necessarily a scam or even a bad thing. It's just some sort of service level based sales gimmick probably... They want you to feel like you didn't do everything you could for your vehicle because you rejected their sales pitch. I'm sure it works on a lot of people.
Your service this time apparently did not give them a chance to do the pitch!
If you read my initial post, they claimed we declined it and are implying that we're in some type of violation. I'm sure they try to scare people into thinking they void their warranty if they don't get it done.
I did. And yes I believe that is exactly what they are trying to pull in this case. I'm sure it nets them sales.
EDIT: In spite of the dealer being a Toyota franchisee, they all come up with their own "service recommendations" and they may be quite different depending on how honestly the dealership is run. Sadly this is true for many dealers - of all makes. Many dealerships bring in outside service consultants who design a sales plan for the service department. These plans are not really designed to help the customer. They are designed to make money.
I have nothing against the dealership making money (obviously they would all perish if they didn't make money), but their honesty and integrity level varies just like any other business.
The bottom line...if you follow all maintenance schedules - as outlined in your owners manual, and keep the receipts from when the work is done you will not have a problem with your vehicle's warranty regardless of what the dealership might lead you to believe!

The spread sheet is applicable to a 2009 Highlander V6 AWD. The difference in model year should make no difference as to which vehicle it would pertain to. I'll send it once I get home.
I personally have one shop, one manager and one mechanic I work with. The mechanic knows that whether the brakes need to be done now or in 20,000 miles he's getting the job. I trust him and he's never made me question that trust. He's been moved from store to store, along with the management team at least 4 times. I always follow. If you weren't in Western Maryland I'd suggest you come down to Baltimore County and introduce you to my 'guys.'
I have a local shop that works on all my other cars/trucks. They did the maintenance on our Pilot before we traded it as well. Your spreadsheet will become the Highlander bible. Thanks
