My wife and I put a deposit on a 2010 Highlander Limited yesterday. The deal was great (I think anyway) $34400 (before trade, deposit, etc) and the 2.9% financing for a vehicle with 51 mi and every option, even remote start, except rear seat DVD.
We went in looking for the best $$ deal on a Highlander and we think we got it.
Here's the rub. Does anyone think the 2011, similarly equipped, even though a few $k more is really the better deal in the long run?
I have been scouring the net (until I found this site) looking for answers.
We have owned several Toyota veh. incl a mint 1990 SR5 pickup (we still own) a Latin American Diesel 4 Runner, and the '07 Avalon we bough new and will be trading.
Please give me your opinions. We haven't signed anything yet.
Look at Edmunds.com and Carmax.com to determine if you're getting a good deal. I'm vicious when it comes to negotiating (having been a car salesman as well as having worked for TFS) I won't pay more than actual invoice, knowing there is about another $1500 they'll make over invoice.
I wouldn't go for a 2011 (based on their ugly look) but in addition I would use the fact that the 2011's are out (with a whole new look) to negotiate harder on a 2010.

The dealership I purchased mine from is a no haggle dealership.Their prices are pretty competitive and I do extensive research prior to buying. They have a 2010 limited 4wd that appears similarly equipped for 33763 plus 99 processing fee. Price is complete less tax, tags and taxes. The similarly equipped 2011's are about 1000 higher. Hope this helps.
One thing to consider is what you will get when you sell or trade your new vehicle years from now, the 2010 will be 1 year older than the 2011 and you will get less for it. This might erase the lower price you pay now for the 2010. I don't know how to compute this now, but it's something to consider.
Dont think I'd ever get used to the headlights, they just buldge so much... And being that the 2011's are out on dealer lots, and the 2010 is now the older car, you can probably get an awesome deal a 2010.
Don't know if what your getting is a good deal with the USD since I'm in Canada, but I know buying my '10 Limited with everything except rear dvd, I got 5000 off the list price and their extended warrenty plan, and this was in May, before any word of the 2011 facelift.

We also bought a 2011 instead of the 2010 because we liked the new styling better; the headlights look much better in person than in pictures, not an issue at all.
As for price, we got a 4wd Limited with JBL 6-disc, carpeted floor mats, wheel locks for $34,401 (no NAV or rear seat DVD). So if you are going for the 2010, keep in mind no matter what the dealer tells you, the 2010 is already a year old and therefore they should be giving you a better price to offset the year's worth of depreciation.

Don't think I have ever been to a forum where anyone really loved the new refresh if they had the prevous model. Like it makes their Highlander any "lessor" if a new and improved verson comes out.
I don't have either at this point and was ready to get a 2010 which a month ago there was nice stock but when you wittle it down to color, equip and model the list really drops.
Basically I was cool with 2010 but it was just $1500 less than a 2011. Can't say I have spec'd out the differences other than what is visual but my wife likes the new model a bit more and we just decided to wait a few months until supply 2011's build up a bit and they would deal a bit more.
Looks are subjective. I'd have to say the 2011 looks better in person and prefer it. Pre-'11 looks a bit bland but lets be honest, this is not the best looking crossover on the market to begin with. You don't buy a highlander for its beauty or to make a statement. I told my wife "higherland tells people you have arrived!!! But nobody noticed!"
Lot of value and very nice drive. If we want attention, we can always get a Lexus!
IM sure somehow I can get a higlander with the gold emblam package!
Regarding price, thats just based on every market and where you start from.
I'd have to say you can always get it cheaper and someone is always going to boast about doing better than you.
Price is only an issue in the absence of quality.
If you really want the best price your gonna have to put some work in and know what it costs the dealer. Don't forget, they are in business to NOT give cars away.
MOst important you have to be able to walk away. What leverage do you have if you don't? Find a few dealers and negotiate. When you have a good deal go to your favorite dealer and present what you can do. If they say "No" you gonna walk? Thats your choice.
The only cars getting attention around Baltimore are Italian built or some high end German built. Other than that a Lexus is as common/ordinary as any other vehicle on the road. I guess it's different in the Carolina's?

Sorry, but the headlights on the 2011 have got to go. WTF were the designers thinking? The rest of the 2011, not a problem.

I think its who is paying attention. Spend the last two weekends in Baltimore area recently. Since We car shopping we were paying attention.
Lots of LExus RX 350's thats for sure.
IM really being sarcastic to the negative reaction to the refresh on the 2011. I have seen this all the time when BMW's get refreshed and how negative most folks are. MOst BMW owers who lurk forums are usually young and way into thier cars.
Lots of Lexus others here in NC too.
My wife won't drive a Lexus. She has her reasons.
My higher net worth friends keep thier net worth in line by not blowing it on cars. Many have bought Highlander LTD's and really like them. We went from a ML 7 years ago and put 135k on a Sienna limited. It was a much better fit for our needs and I have to say the lack of repair costs and maintence has been really nice. We don't need a van anymore and desire a good MPG vehicle for social, Political and economic values. Highlander scores very well on our list.
We also bought a 2011 instead of the 2010 because we liked the new styling better; the headlights look much better in person than in pictures, not an issue at all.
I totally disagree. I was beginning to think the new headlights looked alright in pictures, but after seeing 5 in real life sitting on my dealers lot, I think had I not already bought my 2010 I'd be buying a Pilot right now. They look ok from head on, but the rear 3/4 view blew my mind. Just so strange. But I guess it's certainly unique!
I also noticed the new hood is pretty sloped, and lost the two buldges, kinda makes the front look a bit lower. Can you still see the hood when driving? I loved that about the HL when I first test drove one, it felt like driving a SUV and not a minivan like I felt many crossovers tend to.
