Maybe we can play around with ours today. We'll be heading to friends on a long drive and it's in the 20's outside. I can tell you that, yes, it works with both AC and heat. I do know it does come out warm in the back (haven't tried setting front to cool and rear to warm...and don't know that we'll want to in these temps

). But whether the roof vents are "hot" versus "warm", I haven't paid that much attention.
My daughter sits on the passenger side in the back seat and I do know that with the AC that roof vent works better at getting cold with the AC than the one behind the driver's seat. So I'm guessing that one has a more direct route. Not sure which vent you're checking (if you're not checking all of them).
This was one of the first things we tested with the AC because our '04 Sienna we used to have almost never got cold air flowing out of those ceiling vents with the AC in summer. I was pleased to find these actually work in the HL.
