What do you think, is 10,000 miles too long to go for the 1st oil change? What about after the 1st change, stick with 0W20 every 10,000 miles or go to 10w30 every 3,000 - 5,000 miles? Where did you get that 10000 mile number? In your manual, or is this just something that you have heard? I didn't think synthetic oil had a longer oil change interval than regular oil, but I could be wrong. That being said, I believe the 2011 engines are the same as the 2008-2010 engines. One thing that you didn't mention was the size of your engine...2.7 or 3.5L? Towing option or not? My 2009 manual says that for the 2.7L, either 5W20 or 0W20 oil can be used. For the 3.5L without the towing package, 5W20 should be used. For the 3.5L with the towing package, 5W30 is recommended. According to that schedule, I am guessing that yours is a 2.7L. But things could have changed with the 2011 models, but I would be surprised.

Yes, the 2011 Highlanders have synthetic 0W20 oil straight from the factory, with a recommended oil change interval of 10k miles. While I'm sure this would be okay, I still plan on changing the oil with the same 0W20 every 5k miles.
I know that with the free 2 year maintenance, they will only change the oil for free every 10k miles, so I will just pay for the 5k and 15k oil change.

Yes, this appears to be the recommendation in the owners manual for the 3.5 L V6 non hybrid engine. I thought everything was the same engine wise between the 2008-2010 HL and the 2011. When I popped the hood on the 2011, the engine oil cap says 0W20. The owners manual says replace the oil at 5000 miles if you have been towing a trailer or driving in harsh conditions... otherwise replace at 10,000 mile intervals. It has a maintenance schedule for every 5,000 miles, but basically, it is checking floor mat position, and fluid levels.
Has anyone received their maintenance coupons on their 2011 HL yet?
hm. I just picked up a 2011 a few days ago and they scheduled my first service appt. while I was there. The dealership's first free oil change is 5,000 miles. Its covered by Toyota's 2 year maintenance plan.
They made it very clear to me that the first oil change, and every change thereafter at 5k intervals were covered by Toyota Care which comes with all 2011 vehicles.
Strange, maybe dealerships vary their policies in this regard.

The fine print usually says that city stop and go driving is defined as a harsh condition therefore oil changes every 5000 miles.
The better question is what changed with the 3.5 V6 between 2008 and now to go from 5W-30 to 0W-20 synthetic??
Is this a marketing thing to get to claim higher MPG??

I spoke with head service guy, and he said use regular dino oil 5w30. They use bulk Mobile Clean 5000. I think it is a $ & mileage thing.

I don't believe anything changed with the V6 engine, but the 0W20 synthetic oil is supposed to achieve higher MPG. Ironically, the MPG numbers for the 2011 Highlander V6 dropped from 17/23 to 17/22.
