Too much stress on the engine in my opinion.

My experience has been that to handle the weight of a vehicle the gear ratio on 4 cylinder Engines has to increase the gear ratio over a V6. In the long run the difference in mpg is not that great and that cost difference in gas over a annual basis is insignificant.

If cost per mpg is a high priority then a HL is not a good choice.

I bought my HL for what it is and did not expect high mpg compared to a Prius.

The Venza is available with a 4cyl/AWD. Highlander V6/AWD is only 250lbs heavier. 100lb difference due to engines and a Highlander I4/AWD would only weigh 150lbs heavier than the Venza. Toyota hasn't suffered enough in sales to offer it yet.

More gears in the transmission can make up for the final drive ratio. The 2.7L/6-speed auto would work fine. We're depressed by the 5-speed auto with the V6.

And, the 2.5L in the RAV4 is rated to tow 1500lbs with a weight of ~3500 pounds. The 2.7L should not have a problem moving the Highlander around for the majority of non-lead-footed drivers.

With the economy the way it is, not sure why the 2.7L isn't offered with AWD. I think it would have good sales volume. And, I was disappointed when the 3.3L was replaced by the 3.5L in the hybrid. The 2.7L would've been perfect replacement for the 3.3L. I'd buy a 2.7L Hybrid AWD instantly if it was offered.

I think that Toyota is trying to keep the 'upscale' image of the Highlander. I thought that, that is what Lexus is for. They did dump the V8 in the 4runner already. But, the Landcruiser, Tundra, Sequoia are now bloated pigs with lipstick. Instead of sticking with their roots, they blindly jumped on the same road as GM. Hopefully they pull a u-turn soon.
