I just picked up an '11 Base last weekend and I'm getting pretty annoyed at the recirculate button automatically turning off (going to outside air) after 3 minutes. It's pretty cold outside here, and I don't like cold air blowing at me suddenly when I'm driving on the freeway. Anyone got any tips on how to keep the climate control in recirculate mode permanently?
It turns recirc off automatically (giving you fresh air) to avoid your windows fogging up when the temp falls below a certain point. I've heard that point is anywhere from 48 to 56 degrees). If you hold the recirc button for more than 5 seconds, it will override the setting. However, once you turn the vehicle off, it goes back to its auto mode and you'll have to hold the button again to override it.

I'm still curious as to why you need it on recirc for heat rather than using the temperature dial. Let the fresh air come in and set the temp where you want it. That's what we do.

The car's engine takes a few minutes to warm up, so the heater doesn't even work at that point. I'd also rather not have any air blowing at me, whether it be cold or warm. At freeway speeds, there's quite a lot of "wind" in fresh air mode.

Ah, gotcha.

Forgot to mention, the tip of holding recirc for 5 seconds works! Got home without any annoying blast of wind in my face. Wish I didn't have to hold it down every time though

Had the same problem with the cold air coming back on before my '11 Base warmed up. Figured it out from reading a thread on another topic where the cure was also holding the button down for a few seconds. I now expect to find that feature on more controls. Sometimes the control doesn't reset after turning the engine off so I'm still partially confused about it's operation. It must depend on one of the related settings. Like how it won't go into recirc when in Defrost mode. (Forgot that I had left it on.)

I have an '09 HL Ltd but I don't have that problem. The one I do have is in the summertime, even with the outside air temp being cooler than inside, the recirc comes on. Apparently the recirc program can be changed to manual control but it has to be done by Toyota service personnel. When I first got mine, I had it written into the deal to have the recirc programmed to Manual operation. Unfortunately they were not able to do it before I picked it up and was told to bring it back later. Have never gotten around to doing it. I know someone else that had the reprogramming done on his '09. I'm sure the same can be done for 2011 model.

RECIRC is also very beneficial when driving in a tunnel. Whether on AC or HEAT, RECIRCULATE will keep any unventilated tunnel fumes out of the passenger compartment. This is a necessity especially when you get stuck in a tunnel 'traffic jam'!

So glad to hear there is a way to avoid the automatic recirculation problem. It is my only issue with the 2007+ Camrys. I would rather manually control the recirculation to avoid inhaling fumes from the car in front of me.
