Hi all...tire rotation question

Hello Toyota Nation,
Just bought a 2008 Highlander in December with 46k miles on it... love it so far! I am in New England and with all the snow we've been getting, I am very happy with my new ride.
I've been browsing/searching the forums for all the necessary information (DIY oil changes, towing info, etc...) but one thing I cannot find is information about doing a tire rotation by myself. Because of the TPMS sensors, is it still possible to just simply rotate the tires by myself? My previous vehicle was a 1998 corolla, so the TPMS sensors are completely new to me...
Thanks!
-Jason

TPMS has no effect on tire rotation. It could care less which location on the vehicle the tire is (in fact, you could remove the sensors and keep them all in a single pressurized container in the vehicle and the system wouldn't know it). So rotate 'em as you like.

Jason. One thing to keep in mind is that when rotating the tires, rotate front to back and back to front. It is not recommended that you switch sides. This is especially true if your tires have a directional pattern. The handbook shows the spare being included in the rotation but I have never done that with any of the 3 Highlanders I've driven.
Also be aware of the following;
Auto makers must begin phasing in the tire-safety devices into new models in September. All new vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or less will be required to come equipped with them by the 2008 model year.

FMVSS Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
138 is a regulation created by the National Highway Traffic Safety AdministrationThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, often pronounced "nit-suh") is an agency of the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government, part of the Department of Transportation.
The objective of this regulation is to alert drivers if the pressure in a tire is down by 25%. All vehicles built since September 2007 are required to have a tire pressure monitoring systemA tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an electronic system to monitor the air pressure inside a pneumatic tire. They are sometimes referred to as remote tire pressure monitoring systems (RTPMS) or simply as Run flat indicators.

In other words, TPMS is mandatory in the U.S. but not yet in Canada.

Thanks Peter and Moose!

Peter, I did notice that the manual shows the spare being included in the rotation pattern... but I looked at my spare, and it looks like a different brand of tire than my 4 tires. So I was not planning on including the spare in the rotation. I will check tomorrow to see if my tires have a directional pattern.
3 Highlanders! That's impressive!

The spare is probably the infamous Toyo A20 tire. Definitely keep it out of the rotation. There were alot of discussion threads on this tire because of it flaking prematurely.

Yep, I checked and the spare is indeed the Toyo A20. Bad tire? I guess when I have some time to kill I will do a quick forum search.
My tires are "Bridgestone - Dueler H/L 400" and I don't see any directional arrows on them. I will still follow the front to back, back to front guidelines though.

Random question...this morning a piece of ice flew off a truck in front of me on the highway and now there's a crack in my windshield. (Love winter). Obviously insurance will take care of this... but when I look at my windshield, in the center at the top (surrounding the area where the center rear view mirror is) there are all these black dots. Are those the radio antenna? Has anyone had experience with getting a windshield replaced? What do the contractors that the insurance companies hire do about the black dots?

I believe the radio antenna are those lines that are in the rear side windows. Do you have a Limited or heated windshield? It might be that. I had to replace my heated windshield and it cost over a $1000. Luckily insurance paid for most but had to cough up the comprehensive deductible.

No I don't have a Limited, and I do not believe I have a heated front Windshield. I think all I have is the button for the rear windshield and side rear view mirror defrost.

Over $1000? Did you have to get it done at the Toyota dealership? Or did the insurance company send one of those contractors with the vans that can come to your home/work and do the work in the parking lot?

Jason, I believe those dots are just to screen out the sun to some degree. The fill in the gap between the two visors when they are in the down position. The visors themselves may have a piece that slids out. According to the handbook, they are for use when the visor is used to block sun from the side window. Hope this helps. Not sure if all glass company supplied windshields have those dots but I would imagine they would. I had those dots on my '06 HL as well. Can't recall if the '02 had them.

Peter

When I had my Tacoma windshield replaced last year, it had the same black dots to filter out the sun behind the rear view mirror. So I'm guessing that the new windshield will have the same stock filter on it.

Thanks guys... that does help a lot. If their purpose is to just block out the sun, I could even live with it if the replacement does not have them.
But it is encouraging that Moose had a windshield replaced and the new one did have the dots!

Glass companies have gotten really good at duplicating OEM glass. I bet the replacement looks the same.

No I didn't get it done at the dealership. I took it to a glass shop. At the time it happened, my HL was less than a year old which makes the supply limited, plus it's a heated windshield. There are heating coils inside the bottom edges of the windshield. I think a regular windshield would cost $5-700. And yes, the replacement basically does look exactly the same other than it's missing the Toyota emblem.

I personally feel that tire rotation is a waste of time, as long as you have a properly aligned vehicle! If your vehicle is AWD, then I definitely think its a waste of time. I just replaced my Duelers (from the factory) with 46000 miles on them, far more than most folks say they are getting here on the board. I never once rotated them. Just like the 3k oil changes, I feel the tire rotation thing is also another marketing tool used to put money in the pockets of the dealers. I have never rotated tires on any of my vehicles and probably never will.

Interesting. I thought tire rotation was supposed to "even out" the wear on tires...making them last longer. Are you saying rotating actually causes the tires to wear faster?
Are there other benefits from tire rotation (other than tire wear) that you could miss out on if you never rotate your tires?
