FYI 2011 Highlander After market DVD installation.

2011 Highlander After market DVD installation.

In 2011 Highlanders the FM module is not working properly. There is a big static noise coming out of speakers. My installer can’t figure out what is causing it. I tried at least two, but both had same problem. So I end up installing a relay and hardwire throught AUX input. By default AUX is dissable and only enables once you put the 3.5 AUX cable into it. Ok but you can bypass it by changing function on the back side of it. I will post the picture asap (by Saturday).

i also have three page Wiring information that i like to post but don't know how to upload it. please help.

Highlander aftermarket stereo FM issue solved

I purchased a Chinese no name NAV/GPS for my 2009 Highlander Hybrid with JBL and had two installers take a crack at it. The first "expert" damaged the adapter for the JBL by cutting off the RCA connectors. Only one speaker would work. Then he tried again and all speakers sort of worked as he bypassed the JBL completely and used the headunit's amp. The second charged me $200 for a sosche (spelling?) JBL adapter. He got the speakers working as long as you didn't use FM and there was no AM. He said that I would need an FM booster at a cost of $45. He also screwed up the speaker connections as the fade and R/L were wrong.

I decided to take it all on myself. I had already purchased an Axxess JBL adapter $50 and I used it as you can turn up the input gain. I fixed up the bird's nest wiring. I then learned about the diversity antenna in the Highlander that has a large and small Motorola plugs, and the head unit only has a large female Motorola slot. The FM reception is crappy. I then found an adapter online that will let me plug both of them in. Installers I talked to couldn't tell me where the antenna booster is. I found it, it is a small black wire that runs with the antenna wires...duh?. I hooked it up to the ant control on the wiring sheet and with no adapter yet I have excellent FM reception. I then hooked up the ipod wire and made better connections with the wires. My stereo rocks now. I also have a reverse camera in the unit as well as the factory small one.

I purchased a stereo removal kit at Walmart for $20.00.

Bottom line:I am sure there are expert installers but it is better to do it yourself. Believe me, I am a Physician and I don't have the time to do this and I have never have done this before. It just angers me to get charged professional rates from "expert" installers that could be replaced by monkeys. (excuse my spelling and grammar)

yikes, thats no fun what you had to go through. I would only take my car to a major/high end audio shop if I take it somewhere, but I usually almost always do all the work my self anyway. I wonder how the 1st guy buy-passed the jbl amp, since those headunits you got has 4 channels and the JBL system has 8 (including the sub), seems like you would lose power and speakers. I don't get how they had so much trouble with the JBL adapters, they are basically plug and play (except for power and ground). If you plug in the 4 RCA's right you get all the speakers + fade, thats crazy to think he would cut them off when its so simple. .
good job fixing the "experts" mistakes and to Toyota Nation!
