Well, to continue from my '17" wheels vs 19" wheels' thread, I did visit the dealer today for the first time to check out the Highlander.
Test drove their only Limited which was a 4WD....no nav. The ride is so different from my BMW X3. More truck-like I think but felt quite solid. The steering is amazing...turns on a dime! Definitely bigger than my X3 too and a little bit higher. Overall pretty comfortable.
Here's the issue....and I know I'm jumping the gun here...we couldn't really talk numbers since they didn't have my first choice on the lot (Limited, Nav, black on black), but he's supposed to be getting one in within a couple of weeks. Sticker is about $40k on it.
I have an idea of what they will give me for my '07 X3 which I still have a large payoff on. Basically, I may end up with a grand or so in my pocket, which is why I don't think the numbers will end up working for me. I need to be at around $500/mo payment-wise.
So, given that I may very well have to lose out on my first choice, I'd like to know what you would do. Guess this would be my list in order of preference...
1) Limited w/Nav and aluminum running boards (black on black)
2) Limited without Nav (I think this saves around $2k) and aluminum running boards (black on black)
3) SE and aluminum running boards (black on black)
I'm not sure what #3 saves compared to #1, but I imagine around $5k?
No offense to SE owners as it looks great....just prefer the 19" wheels and the wood grain interior but heck, everything adds up!
When I was in the market, I thought about it and decided I don't need the 4wd version since I will need it maybe 2-3 times throughout the year. Also the gas milage is little better. Mine is a 2010 2WD Limited with nav but you can look into 2WD limted without nav which should save you quite a bit.
You should be able to get a 2wd limited no nav around $32,5. 2WD with the nav should be around $34,5 and 4wd no nav should be around $34,2 plus tax etc.

A 2WD limited with no nav for under $33k? The sticker on the 2WD limited with nav is $40k....figured it would go for around $36k.
I'm going to try another dealer tomorrow to look at some SEs as well.

The 2wd limted with nav should be around upper $38 not $40. Maybe yours include extra accessories. I know you live in a different state but check this out. Maybe it will help you for negotiating the price.
I might be in the minority here, but I'd get the AWD/4WD version myself! I prefer to have AWD/4WD capability at hand and never need it, then to not have it and find that it would've made a difference just once!
Although, with the H/L's AWD system one doesn't have very much input in its operation!

Considering the quality of portable navigation units and how cheap they are... the OEM NAV is a pure luxury item that is way way way overpriced. Of course, it's always packaged with something else that they want you to want...
Even at a good interest rate, your note would be over $650 a month on the 40K version.

In all honesty, I don't have to have the nav...I like though how that screen becomes your backup camera screen which is much larger than the smaller standard screen.
I think I better forget about the Limited model....don't want a note that high. I pay $497 now on my X3.
Wonder if I should try lease one instead. I see there's a lease special on the SE V6 for like $429/mo though I'm not sure what it includes. Wonder what a lease on a Limited would be.
If you are in TX, do you really need AWD? They are not that great. In Seattle, a set of snow tire will perform better than AWD with regular.
NAV? Don't bother if budget is limited. In fact, even if you can afford it, think twice. Test yourself, try to do a search on "older" car with NAV and see how you like it when the car is old, the NAV is old. We shopped a few cars in the last few months (new and used) and at 1st we like factory NAV but after seeing a few older car with NAV (2010 Sienna Limited, Pilot) we dropped the idea on NAV. It just so dated after a couple years unless the NAV integrated very well at the beginning.
I will pick the Limited 2WD over the rest to save $ good luck

I don't need 4WD at all...wasn't a concern for me as I was planning on 2WD all along. I was just saying that all the dealer had today on the lot for me to drive in a Limited was 4WD.
When you say that the NAV gets outdated, so you mean software-wise? To be honest, it's not a deal-breaker. Again, it's convenient I guess, and moreso because I like that it offers the larger screen for the back-up camera.
Guess I need to price the Limited 2WD too, with fewer options. I'm not in the best position trade-wise, though I'm not in the negative, but still...the deal is that I don't want to spend any more out of pocket...just want to use my trade and see how close I can get the monthly note to what I pay now.
