when do you think you should change your oil the first time on a new engine? Toyota want you to change it at 5000 miles.I think that is way to far for a new engine,I was thinking on changing mine at 1500 and doing it myself and then let them change it at 5000 miles because it comes with the price of the car for 25000 miles or 2 years.I think after you changed it the first time then 5000 will be OK. What do you think!!!!
The recommended oil change interval on the 2011 Highlander v6 is 10,000 miles. At 5,000 miles all they will do is inspect things like your floor mats. This is copy/pasted from the owner manual:
"5,000 miles or 6 months
Check installation of driver’s floor mat
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
Rotate tires
Visually inspect brake linings/drums and
brake pads/discs
The below is conditional based on use:
Additional Maintenance Items for
Special Operating Conditions 2
Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads:
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect engine air filter
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt (4WD) 3
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body
Driving while towing, using a car-top
carrier, or heavy vehicle loading:
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt (4WD) 3
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body
The below is also conditional based on use:
Repeated trips of less than five miles in
temperatures below 32°F / 0°C:
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Extensive idling and/or low speed driving
for a long distance such as police, taxi or
door-to-door delivery use:
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1"
BTW: I am telling them to change it at the first 5k mile service with synthetic even though they normally won't and I will have to pay for it.
If it is any consolation, the reviews on the Toyata synthetic oil are very good on Bobistheoilguy.

Do you know what kind of oil they use (Name of oil).I just think that 10000 miles on oil that is in a new engine should be changed early because of all the new metal and ect. That has to be floating around in the oil.I will change mine and paid for it myself just to get it out of the engine,Thats just my 2 cents!!!

I agree. Dirty bathwater is dirty bath water even if it is Perrier.
Since I only drive about 300-400 miles a month, my dealer told me to come in for my first oil change after 5 months....and then every 5 months after that, so I'll get my first 4 oil changes for free basically (2 years vs. 25k miles).

Have a 2011 Highlander. I was told from my service manager that the engine has numerous factory additives to help condition the engine. He told me to go the entire 10,000 miles so that the additives can work.
Personal preference I guess. I have an extended warranty so I am going to follow the Toyota recommendations. Wondering how much the synthetic oil changes are going to run after the 2 year free maintenance runs out.
The days of an engine leaving the factory with shavings is probably unlikely. But an oil change is cheap insurance.
Just got my 60 day over-due service. I called them twice and said, hey, got 3700 miles on it. They said, come in at 6 months, that will be in about 2 weeks irregardless.
They said they WILL change the oil at 5K, in my case 6 months instead of 5K. When I said I read on TN it is not happening till 10K, they said, nope, if synthetic used at 10K, if not synthetic, done at 5K.
They also said a check engine light will be reset. They said it will come on at 5K.
Wondering if you do it yourself oil guys reset the light yourself and how you do it? Maybe there was a thread someplace I need to look up.
BTW, how often will that light come on? 5K-10K-15K and so on?

In your owners book they tell you how to reset your lite, not much to it push your mile reset button a couple of time in a order and it goes out..

So If I use castrol 0-20 I should be alright and change it at 3000 miles sound good to you or wait till I get 5000 because of the additive they put in it...

My question to you would be:
How well do you trust your dealer?
My 2011 HL came with those free oil change coupons and such, but I am thinking of tossing the out. I do not trust the dealership in this town that I am in at the moment. To be honest, I'd be more than happy to do it myself. Read to many stories in here and on TW about dealers forgetting to add oil after they drain and so on.
When I do the first oil change, I will send a sample to blacklabs for analysis. I change my oil on my Tacoma every 10k and is running with full synthetic.
Just curious as to what others are doing...using the dealer free oil change or not...
You aren't going to hurt anything by changing the oil earlier than Toyota recommends. Much of the additional Moly in initial fills is actually dissolved assembly lube from engine assembly.

Funny how many people twist the story....My 2011 lander has a "factory" sticker that says to bring the vehicle in at 5000 for the first oil change. When I picked it up, NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE told me Jack turd as to when to bring it for maintenance. All I was told was about those stupid coupons will be coming in the mail.
As far as the free maintenance, what exactly is free? Labor only or labor and parts?
I really hate dealerships when it comes to doing basic maintenance. They have some moron doing oil changes and most of the time, they either cross thread the drain plug or leave half of the oil in the belly. This to me is sloppy service.
