Storage Box

Has anyone bought one of the hitch storage boxes from Thule or Stowaway? They are pretty pricey and it's hard to tell if one is better than the other. I am going to need one for vacation this year because my HL doesn't have the same storage as my 2002 Denali XL had.

Love the truck, bought a 2008 Sport that was loaded. I loved the Denali too, but didn't like the gas mileage

Thanks

After reading a lot on these forums, it seems that if you have the factory cross bars, there may be issues with the factory cross bars supporting the weight of the box because of their flex.

It seems that most have gone with the aftermarket (thule/yakima) cross bars which are stronger (but aren't flush like the factory ones). Also search for the right size one because the longer boxes might be in the way of your rear gate.

I have a 48" x 20" Draw-Tite cargo tray hitch mounted on my '11 Highlander. I then bought a 48" waterproof hitch tray cargo bag off amazon and inside the bag i put the biggest plastic bins i could buy. Works great and total cost under $150.

I have seen the Thule dedicated cargo boxes but they are close to $450 (though they do swing out to allow trunk hatch entry).

Anyway, i find these hitch tray's very useful and inexpensive. Might be worth looking into.

I just bought a large Stanley rolling tool box from Home Depot for $60.00 ( same box sells on Amazon for $152.00 ) I plan to mount it in a basket hitch and theat should give me the extra storage I need. The total cost should end up being around $160 to $180. The box also comes with a keyed lock

What's the part number on this box? It sounds good if the dimensions are right.

Harbor Freight

Harbor Freight has an aluminum hitch carrier that can be had for under $100. I have one, and it works great with 3 big plastic storage tubs. Max weight is stated at 500 pounds, but I probably never exceeded 150 pounds. Here's a link for the current price
