For those of us who’ve got the JBL system, it comes with 8" bass in tail gate, 6 1/2" full range in the back doors, 6" x 9" woofer in the front doors and 2 1/2" mid range on the dash.
There is no high or no tweeters…
Hahaha… WORNG!!! I just added my tweeters to the A pillars. What a different it made.
The sound is now so much fuller and richer!
Hope some of you will find this useful!
First, remove door seal
carefully pull out A pillar from the top, you will see the top clip needs to twist 90 degree to release. Middle clip pulls right out.
This is what it looks like the backside of A pillar
Carefully remove dash-board speaker cover, all clips...
remove 2 screws that hold down the speaker

remove speaker by disconnect the clip.
adding the inline filter that comes with the tweeter
Solder the wires to the speaker and zip tie the filter to the bracket
reconnect the speaker to test sound
Now, finding a good location for the tweeter

Drill baby drill... (make sure your tweeters are in the same position on both A pillar)
A hole is a hole... what's done is done... no turning back now...
Test fitting...
Notice the SONY logo? I do... so,to keep the setup more OEM, I decided to kill the logo.
Flush mount
Noted the tweeter mounting bracket... rewired the tweeter
I place a piece of foam on the back of the tweeter just in case its press against some wires after putting it back in place.
Reinstall the A-pillar and that's it. DONE!!!
I thought about mounting the tweeters next to the mid-range on the dash but it will be much more work and if I screw up, the A-pillar doesn't cost as much to replace.
One little tips on removing the A-pillar's top clips. The side airbag has a little "play", so move it to the side and use a small long nose plier to reach it from the bottom of the clip, then turn it 90 degress to release the A-pillar.
Enjoy!!!

Great work, and it does look good enough to be oem.
My only concern....although it looks like it is below the airbag, I would have some concern messing with the a-pillar trim in case it somehow it impacts how it reacts in the case of an accident when the airbag is deployed.

I too have that concern when I was planning this project. And I took the A-pillar off a few times to observe and pretend what would happen if the airbag deployed...
My conclusion was the top part of the A-pillar is suppose to pop open breaking the "blue" clip and pop the middle clip as well. The bottom of the A-pillar will sit still at the dash and the tweeter is sitting far below enough not to interfere with the airbag. Once you open the A-pillar and you should understand what I am talking about...
It is by far the best and afforable mod i've done to my highlander yet...

Sounds reasonable enough to me. If I had not changed out my head unit for a pioneer, I would seriously consider this mod. In fact, my intention was to swap out the the head unit, speakers and add two small tweeters up front somewhere because I found the highs seriously lacking. But when I got my Pioneer in, the sound, compared to my stock radio (non JBL), was night and day. Now, I have more highs and lows than I need, and the stock speakers actually sound quite good...at least good enough for my taste.

Im considering doing this to my highlander, but I had 1 quick question. Have you noticed a loss of volume in the dashboard speakers since you now have 2 speakers (tweeter, and 2.5") drawing power from the same source?
thanks,
Patrick

Hi, What Pioneer head unit did you buy to replace the stock Highlander base (non jbl) head unit?

The answer to your question is NO.
As a matter of fact, it sounds much brighter and louder.
Got a bit of a warning for those who have done this or thinking about doing this.
I measured the specs on the OEM 2.5" speaker today and found that it was a 2 ohm speaker. When you added the 4 ohm tweeter in parallel with the 2.5" 2 ohm speaker, you created a 1.3 ohm load. That might damage the amp since the load is less than 2 ohms as not many amps are stable at near 1 ohm levels.
Just a friendly heads up
