08' Highlander liftgate won't open?

I am on vacation with my family and our 08 highlander liftgate won't open. When you engage the button it activates but doesn't release the door? Anyone ever have this issue or a possible fix? I tool the cover plate off the inside of the door but there didnt appear to be a release of any kind? Could use some help! Thanks guys.

To be exact I have a 08' hybrid AWD no auto liftgate.

Which trim line of Highlander do you own, which will help members diagnose your issue. I own the Base model, and the only time that's ever happened is when the battery is dead. I think one of the most idiotic things Toyota ever did (or did not do) was provide either an internal mechanical release to open the hatch and/or an external keyed ability like they do with the driver's door.
