No, they're not considered Gen 3, the changes were pretty much cosmetic.

Think of it as generation 2.5. Generation 3 will probably come with a full refresh in another 2-3 years.

All I can say is it better have a protector lip over the rear bumper or those designers, engineers, and customer service reps at Toyota get a big fat "F" for the Gen 3 in my opinion.

And it better have a 7 pin Plug as part of the Towing package...any towed vehicle over 3000 lb has to have brakes in the US by law. Toyota never has understood what a Towing package should include

Agreed there, every time I move something big in and out of my tailgate I always end up with a few new scratches on the paint.. extremely frustrating.

I read an article a few weeks back on autoblog.org talking about how toyota was starting to look at reliable 4cylinder w/ turbo's to replace the v6's. Which might be possible given the 2gr-fe (our v6) is starting to get old'ish (came out in 2005). With gas prices the way they are and toyota having so many other SUV's, I bet the highlander will be the same size and have a 4cylinder w/ turbo. Since the highlander the based off the Camry we will know soon enough. The 7th generation Camry comes out this fall, take a look there for what the new highlander will be like (powertrain-wise)

See the following bumper Guard that you can only buy from a Southeast region dealer.

Bumper Protector

It works great and is has two 3m adhesive strips which makes installation a snap.

There is a long thread here on it.

Bumper

It is weird that all districts do not have access to the same parts.
Color Keyed Mud Guards are only available through the Southern district.
This Bumper Guard is only available through the Southeast District

Here is a link to the actual Toyota installation instructions

Toyota Bumper Cover

If you took it to a non-southeast division dealer they would look at you funny and say the part number does not exist.
