My 2008 highlander ltd 4wd has its power hatch (lift gate) stuck closed. The latch opens but I cannot open the hatch with power or manual - it appears to be stuck at the top left where the (or one of?) motor is.
Toyota dealer said they have to call Toyota on Monday as they cannot figure it out.
Any ideas?
I had a similar issue, but it was the latch that wouldn't disengage, I had to get the tailgate ECU reprogrammed. It sounds like the motor for the power tailgate is locked in place keeping the door from going up. I don't know if it uses a clutch to attach to the gears when it lowers the door, but it shouldn't be engaged when opening it (it sounds like something like that is)...very strange.

I checked the fuse, and the reset. The Dealer said they did the same today and ran their diagnostics, they could not get it to work - said it sent a message, or told them, to contact toyota, it did give them a code but they don't have the details!!
They said they would have the answer from Toyota on Monday.
It struck me as curious why the dealer is not provided all the info?

dealerships never know the whole solution to complex problems. or at least thats what it seems to me. Common/simple problems yes they can fix it, but not so common things they call toyota technical/corporate. Your issue isn't very common i'd imagine, not to mention its just strange, thats probably why they called toyota. They had to do the same thing when my car was having engine issues.

Update - According to the dealer: a couple of teeth broke in the gear for the power liftgate mechanism, as the motor tried to open the door against the jammed mechanism it may have bent the hinges on the liftgate a little, the motor seized due to working against the jammed gear. Toyota says not their problem as it's out of warranty (2008 model) but told the dealer to replace the liftgate and the motor mechanism - $3000 - $4000.
The liftgate now opens manually and I can't see any misalignment.
That sucks beyond reality. Is this starting to be a thing on the landers? How about other owners having this issue? I want to know about it. My wife has a 2011 and I am sure in no mood for dealing with this kind of cheap crap.
I am sorry Ian that you are having this nightmare. For that price, are you getting an entire new gate and with color match? Or just a motor, gear and labor? That is such a rip off. Does Chilton's have a book on the lander?
