Navigation Aggravation

Guys,

I have about 3500 miles on my 2011 LTD FWD V6 HLder with the factory JBL/Nav package. I haven't used the Nav that much and have the same complaints that others have about not being able to use some of the functions when in motion/not in park but I stumbled upon another issue that there may be a solution for - hoping someone out there has an answer.

I was on the interstate on a trip and it was showing an upcoming exit in 19 miles or so as part of the route. So, I take the exit it was calling out and just as soon as I take the exit and get off the interstate, it told me to turn around and get right back on the interstate! I hadn't gone 500 yards before it told me this. Very frustrating because the exit was very congested with traffic and it cost me about 10 minutes navigating back onto the interstate. I use the nav to save time and effort but on this trip it cost me time/effort.

Has anyone else seen this? Solution (other than buying another Nav/GPS)?

If no obvious solution and this is just indicative of the crappy nav system, I may just wind up buying a Garmin and use it for primary nav and maybe use the built-in for POI's and map only - taking advantage of that big screen. I see that Amazon has a cigarette lighter type of pole mount for the Garmin that I could use in the right hand 12V socket which would put the Garmin just below the factory nav on the right side.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

ive had this happen to me a few times. Its annoying, because I was heading down to florida and when I was passing through Atlanta on I-75, it told me to get the interstate right in the middle of downtown and then get back on... needless to say I ignored that. It seems that any large city with weird insteratate intersections seems to put it through a loop every now and then (but its only happened to me probably 4-5 times on trips). There really isn't a solution to this (I don't think), because I was using the most up to date map data at the time....

Does that garmin holder provide power, or does it just take up the 12v plug? I use my 12v socket all the time so i got this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Bracketr...&skuId=1934069 its designed for garmins, tom toms, etc... I didn't want to waste a 12v plug. I use it to hold my ipod and up it in the cupholder closest to the aux in and 12v source (the one to the right of the shifter closest to the front of the car). It works great and would work to hold a garmin.

I will say that I think a garmin (ive had one before this car) works a little better, but the toyota navi still gets you there, has POI, and has a better look to it (built into the dash and all). Plus I love having the screen for the sound system. So I personally just ignore it when I see that happen

When mine looped me like that, I was in North Carolina but not what I would consider a big city. I drive that way a lot so the next time I follow that same route I will see if it does the same thing again. If it does, that might indicate it is an issue with the mapping software. If not, then I would say it might be a GPS glitch in that region..........Just my guess, others may know more about that.

Here is the mount I looked at for the Garmin.

Amazon Amazon

It only works with the Garmins with the ball mount socket mount and yes it does use a 12V socket. Not sure if your 2008 is the same, but on my 2011 I have two 12V sockets up front: One underneath the climate control and another one on the console. So, I would still have one for my phone or iPod.

Yeah, I do like the big screen for the radio and it does give you a big map and lots of POIs so I'd just pickup the Garmin for long trips to rely on the navigation feature. Also, there is a lot to be said for having the GPS on all the time and locked in right when you get in the car (and safety tucked away in the dash). I used it the other day getting from a restaurant to an apartment to drop my niece off for the weekend with friends on short notice. It was just a couple of miles but heavy traffic. I just punched in the address she relayed to me from her mobile phone while I was sitting in traffic. I was at the destination before a portable GPS would have even locked onto the satellite.

Yep the 2011 and 2008 dash are mostly the same (except for I don't have a usb port) so I have both 12v plugs. That bracket is neat, I wish I had known about that when I used my garmin haha. Its nice that it has a 5V usb charger built in. Hopefully it was just a 1 time thing, but even if it isn't it rarely happens for me so you might be lucky and avoid it.
