I am about to pick up my Highlander, deal is almost done. I asked the dealer the cost to install a hitch. Here is the break down of the cost the salesman is quoting me
hitch $176.56
Harness $50.31
Labor $130.2
Does this seem to be a good deal or should I try to do it myself after buying the highlander?

That sounds like an awesome deal. Are you sure that this is an OEM hitch? If so, jump on that deal. My OEM hitch cost me around $800 CAN for the wiring harness and the hitch.

Yes, I specifically asked that if it was the factory Toyota OEM trailer and he assured me it was.
I would question that and/or be ready to find an aftermarket hitch on your vehicle. The genuine Toyota OEM hitch costs $380 or more (depending on where you buy it... I paid $420 at the Toyota dealer, delivered into my hands) just for the part. Then there is the harness and labor. The prices you were quoted look reasonable for an aftermarket hitch and harness.
If you can get an OEM hitch for that price, go for it, because they're almost always in the $400 or so range.
I agree. The harness and labor look about right but the hitch price is way low for a factory hitch but about right for a 3rd party hitch. I just had one installed a month ago on my '11 SE and the total cost with installation was $640 from a very reputable local dealer.
They had originally quoted me $750 but it ended up taking less labor than the estimate.
I would love to believe that the hitch price is real for an OEM. But, I just can't. It is an INSANE price. Make sure you get it in writing. Sounds to good to be true. But, hey if it's the real deal, you scored big time.

Echoing everyone else. If you can get it at that price in the deal, don't hesitate for a moment if it is the OEM Toyota hitch. You'll likely pay double after the sale. My hitch/harness was just over $700 for parts from Gary/toyopartsman and a local Toyota dealer to install it. That wasn't too bad with the insane labor rates locally. Dealers wouldn't budge from $1k if they supplied the parts.

Wow... that's quite a variation in price among dealers.
My installation break down was:
Wiring harness: $165.00
Hitch: $337.50
Labor: $129
Coupon: -$25
Tax: $36.39
^$700-$1000? That's insane! Dealers around here in Madison charge around $400-$600 for parts/wiring/install.
Go figure. I drove to Appleton to buy my Highlander without getting creamed by the Chicago area dealers near me. I guess I should have checked across the border for the hitch, too!
You are in a state that is part of a private distributor ship; Gulf States Toyota, they have hitches that they call factory but I would highly suspect that they are putting on one of their accessory hitches and calling it factory, which in a sense is, but it isn't going to be the Genuine Toyota OEM one. Just to give you an idea, the actual part numbers you want to look for are PT228-48100 for the hitch, which is around $340.00 DEALER cost and the wiring harness PT219-48111-WH(if it is a gas engine) which DEALER cost is around $150.00.
So I am going to say that these are not the part numbers they are putting on your car, if they are, then your prices you are getting are fantastic and I'd say go for it, it is a great deal, if not, at least you have the information you need to get what you want installed.
