Knocking noise after VVT oil line recall work

After I got my 08 HL back from the dealership for the oil line recall, it has occasionally made a knocking/shaking noise on startup (sounds like a diesel knock or shake) that lasts for a couple of seconds. Sometimes on shut down as well. I've checked the oil level several times to make sure it's not low and it's been fine.

My dealer says the noise is not something that could have been caused by any work they did, but I find it too coincidental that the noise would start almost the next day after we got it back.

Before I go in and raise hell, I'm wondering if it could be something else unrelated and also what the noise could be.

Have also noticed a general loss of power, it doesn't pull up hills the way it used to. Feels like it's got 100K on the odometer instead of the 45K it does. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Is it this? Weird noise after start-up
Mine does this but I haven't noticed a lack of power. Other than that no idea

I did read through that thread. The videos posted there seem to show a faster grinding noise. Mine is more of a slower "dieseling" and shake that occurs just after the car has started (i.e. back in the day when a carbeurated car would diesel after you shut it off - it's that final shake at the end just before the car finally shuts down only here it happens while the car has just started and is running). Note sure if I'm just in the early stages of that same problem or if it's different.

oh i have an old v8 jeep that does that. It would shake pretty violently and idle roughly at startup, like 1 bank of cylinders wasn't firing (huge lose of power), ended up being oil leaking into the cylinders, though since you aren't loosing oil it can't be that. hopefully some1 else will be able to provide a little more help

Ours went in to the dealer for the grinding noise on startup several weeks ago. They fixed that and afterwards it had what they described as a "lifter noise". They replaced the lifters with no change.

Currently they are stumped on the new noise and are arraigning to have some kind of Toyota tech escalation take a look at it. I'm not sure when that is happening but hopefully it will be this week. I can keep this thread updated with what they find, it may be similar to what you've got.

According to the dealer our noise was due to some silicone gasket sealer blocking an oil passage. It happened during reassembly after fixing the grinding noise at startup.

Did the engine get damaged because of the oil blockage?

They said they shut it down as soon as it made the noise and I don't think it was run for more than a few seconds in that state. They had to open it up again to correct the problem and didn't find any scoring or evidence of wear.

It runs great now and fortunately I have alot of warranty left. I plan to run the piss out of it after letting the new parts break in to try and encourage any potentially damaged parts to fail.

thanks for the update and info 9volt. I'm still trying to find time to bring the car back into our dealer, but this helps.
