Contact list dumped...is this a common problem?

I just purchaced a 2011 Highlander a few weeks ago. I spent a few hours entering in all my contacts into the NAV system and set up my speed dials and so forth. My cellphone has blue tooth, but is old and low tech, so I have never bothered to enter contacts into the phone itself since it is tricky to do with that phone so it wasnt a upload to the NAV. Anyways, today I went to make a call and my speed dials were gone along with all my contacts. How frustrating! Is this common, I am not too sure if I want to spend another 2 hours entering in everything if this is going to happen again in the near future. I see there is a selection to clear all, but I garantee this was never selected. Is there a way to store my contacts say in a laptop with bluetooth and upload them to the NAV?

2011 Limited with navi.

About 1 year old...using iPhone 3g....loaded my contacts, speed dials and voice tags...

Have never had a problem, never lost the contacts etc....

So no problems here with my setup, FYI.

My wife's cheapie samsung phone also seems to work well....I'm pretty happy with the bluetooth.
