Auto setting for headlights?

I don't get it...I thought "auto"is for daylight headlights on our 2011 SE, is it? On "auto" at night, the lights stay on after engine is turned off and the key is out of the ignition and the doors closed. What's up? Am I not understanding it correctly? Is auto also for regular driving beams at night? Should I not leave it on auto? Thanks.

"Auto" is a feature that automatically turns on the lights when the sensor (usually on the dashboard near the windshield) detects that there's little or no daylight. The dash and all exterior light including the headlights come one at night, in a tunnel, or under a bridge. In short, it takes care of switching between off and on. With the key out and the door locks, the lights may take from 15 sec to a minute to turn off. This is a delay feature that most automakers use for “safety”. Most of the time, the delay function can be adjusted through the Sat-Nav or a dealership. The owner’s manual could explain more.

But with me, I just skip the "auto" function on our 07’ Pathfinder.

In "auto" headlights turn on automatically in low light conditions. When there is plenty of light outside, headlights revert to DRL. Lights stay on for about a minute after leaving the vehicle. You van turn them off immediately by pressing the LOCK button twice on the remote control.

All this is clearly explained in the Owner's Manual (and many other useful things).

I really appreciate your expert advice! However, it wasn't clear in the manual hence me asking here. Not only that but the lights were still on after 10 minutes.
