Toyota canada bongjiovi dsp (digital signal processor) , anyone has this??!
This seeems to be only available in Canada, but based on the reviews it seems to work wonders for the factory stereo. It looks like a plug and play system, but i'm not sure exactly what is required to install it.
Based on what i have read it seems the system is tuned specifically for each toyota model, based on where the speakers are located and the number of speakers. More info is available here:
I did get tha chance to listen to that Bongiovi system on a corolla a few months ago and for me it sounds like crap. I think you have to change the oem speakers with better ones because it just distorts the sound probably because of the cheap oem speakers. IMO.

How would you know what speakers to get, the DSP specs dont seem to be available anywhere. Seems like a better idea just to get an aftermarket amp and speakers!!
I completely agree with charlieboy. Nothing is going to make the factory speakers sound amazing by just tweaking the equalizer. They are still low power paper cone speakers built to a budget. For less money you could very easily pick up some high quality front and rear speakers. And if you really want your music to kick add an amp, and it would still probably be cheaper. Plus aftermarket speakers are usually way better than factory (if powered correctly) in my opinion. Is the bongjiovi a good idea...yes, but there are just better options out there.

I agree that the stock stereo sucks (mine JBL on 2008 Limited).
Any suggestions for the stock speaker replacement? Not looking to spend a fortune or add another amp, just upgrade speakers for better sound - if it is all possible

Most $80+ speakers from major brands (alpine, kicker, pioneer, JL, polk audio, JBL, Infinity, etc...) are usually better than stock.
I've used the Pioneer D-Series speakers before (specifically their 6x9's) and found them to be very good (when properly powered, and in proper enclosure) with plenty of bass, midrange, and awesome tweeters. Unfortunately the speakers of the Stock JBL system are tricky to replace. The rear doors are simple, they are just a standard 4ohm 6.5" coaxial speaker. BUT up front things get tricky. The door 6x9's run at 2 ohms (only a few Infinity'a and JBL GTO's 6x9's run at 2 ohm) and only get low frequency sound from the amp. Then the dashboard 2.5" speakers are a bit tricky. My toyota documents don't indicate a ohm rating. Though it is probably 2 ohm, so that the front 6x9's and 2.5 can be wired up to equal 4 ohm. Only way to confirm this is to check the ohm with a multi-meter. but I've never found a 2.5" speaker that is worth the upgrade. Most aftermarket brands start at 3.5". I've been looking at trying to fit a 3.5" in that location but been to busy to actually attempt it. Then you need to know how much power the JBL amp pushes to each speaker so you don't blow your new speakers if you get low powered ones. I've been planning on taking a multi-meter to the speaker lines to figure out the power, but it can't be that high (40-60 watts for door speakers probably, probably 20watt max each for dashboard speakers, the tailgate sub is 110 watts).

Does anybody know where aftermarket amps can be installed in the newer Highlanders (2008-2011)?? I am thinking of upgrading the whole thing system, but really don't want amps mounted in the open. I haven't done a good look around and taken measurements but maybe someone has looked at this already??

I kept my JBL amp and added to additional amps to my system. I got one under the front passenger seat next to the JBL amp (which fit perfectly under the seat "rail"):
then I installed the other 1 behind the driver 2nd row seat below the 3rd row headrests when they are folded down:
I've had no heat issues in those spots either.

Yeah as sweenyp said perfect location is under the front passenger seat, i think thats where the factory JBL gets mounted.
I plan on installing a full JL Audio system in my 2011. JL audio XD700 5 channel amp with X-over or signal processor on the factory headunit, upgrade all door speakers to JL, install 1" tweeters in the "A" pillars, cutout the liftgate panel and install a throaty 8" JL/Kicker/Fosgate sub in the factory location. Should be pretty sweet when its done!!!

I am definitely jealous of you if you get all that installed. That definitely has the makings of a great system . I am a huge fan of JL subs (I've had a few in the past, got 1 of their 8" in my highlander right now (W1 series, though soon to be upgraded to W3 series )). I've never heard their speakers, but if they are like their subs it should be great.
Just a few things about the tailgate sub idea. For mounting, you only have about 3.5-4" of depth between the front panel and the back one. You would have to use a spacer to get the sub to fit. Plus you will need to seal the tailgate up REALLY good (I did this to mine to help the JBL OEM sub as it isn't even close to being a sealed enclosure). Also you might need to try and figure out the interior volume of the tailgate as subs are responsive to enclosure volume and if its too large for the sub, it could hurt the output.

Thanks Sweeneyp. Looks like there may be some descent room for a sizable after-market amp. I would probly forget the JBL amp altogether.
I hear there is a device made by Audison - a "bit one" - that is a very goog line - level adapter for the purpose of keeping the factory JBL head unit and building out from there. The Audison is not the only make though and somewhat expensive.
Has anyone used a line level adapter and had good results to build out from the factory JBL head unit? Makes, costs, results?
Thanks for everyone's input.

I've been looking for those as I'm interested in replacing my JBL system but keeping the headunit as well. Its difficult because the headunit outputs very weird signals. It has a L and R signal wires (at constant volume), then a dedicated wire that handles volume, then dedicated wires that handle fading etc... I've been trying to find an adapter that take those and just output a L+/- and R+/- RCA (not a "fancy" signal processor) that I could run to a multi-channel amp. The Audison looks to be a signal processor, those might work but they are expensive. There are plenty of adapters to keep the JBL amp with an aftermarket headunit but not the other way around. Kinda frustrating
Or just run the signal wires from the jbl amp into a high level input on a new amp, not an effective way, but it would work. But you would be stuck using the front crossover setup for the 6x9's and 2.5" which I don't like. Plus I also don't like the idea of keeping the JBL amp for no reason.
