I'm trying to register my imported 08 Highlander in Canada but cannot do so because of the outstanding B1E airbag recall. Does anyone know of a fix for this recall?

I thought that you needed a letter from the manufacturer stating that any recalls have been addressed before the car is allowed to cross the border? When I imported my trailer, even though it was brand new, I needed that letter. Even if you bought it privately, I thought that you had to have this.
Sorry I cannot be of any help, as I have a 2009, and there was no such recall, that I was aware of anyway.

Unfortunately there is no fix for this recall at this time. This is what toyota.com says when I logged into my account and checked the recall.
"At the present time, Toyota is developing the remedy for this safety recall. As soon as a remedy is available, Toyota will notify owners of covered vehicles by first class mail. Please continue to check this site for additional information."

Dman1 or Charlie1958, were you able to find out if Toyota is of any help? Wherever I call I am getting a run around.
i support.....T0YOTA CANADA and TOYOTA U.S. have not been much help.Seems the part does not exist and they can t give me a date due to the circumstances in Japan.Very frustrating...HL has been in the driveway since May! RIV won t allow me to register the truck until I satisfy this recall. What s your story?
sensors are buld in curtain airbags so for Toyota to replace both airbags in 300k vehicles (Highlanders and RAV4) = 200 mil $. so this is why they try to find another fix. Maybe the only way is to sue them or for the safety reasons force them to replace both airbags with new ones which would take care of the recall. I don't know but I am stuck in here
I just imported a 08 Highlander Sport into BC Canada.
I had the same issues with the outstanding recall and the RIV would not allow me to register the vehicle with out a recall clearance letter.
The solution was to get a Toyota dealer in the US to fix the airbag sensor before the official recall has been issued.
The did this and cleared any outstanding recalls on the vehicle.
I was then able to import with no problems.
You just have to find a dealer who is willing to do the work before a official recall has been issued.
The replacement part can be a little hard to find due to the situation in Japanese factories but with a little bit of digging around the dealer located the part and shipped it in and fixed the problem at no cost to me.
Not sure how this will work with Canadian dealers? Worth a try.
Thanks so much Villa Fan. That's the first bit of good news we've heard on this subject!!! Would you be able to tell us which dealership in the US provided the fix for you? We are hoping to contact them to see where they located the part. We are truly at our wits end here and really appreciate any help.
I bought the car privately and got the dealer who originally sold the car to fix this recall problem.
It was Lake City Toyota in Seattle WA.
The car had always been serviced by them and they seemed pretty good.
The service manager did have to do a bit of hunting as he said the part was hard to come by.
That is why Toyota have not issued a full recall yet as they just don't have the parts to fix all the vehicles in the recall.
From memory it was a notice of possible recall that was issued but the RIV still took it as a recall and would not allow the vehicle to be registered in Canada.
If you can find out exactly what the part is (i think it is a sensor) then you could see if any dealers in Ottawa have it and ask them to fix it prior to the official recall.
Good luck with this.
