Canada Towing - weight question

Hi, I have a 2009 Highlander (4 cylinder) without the tow package so my tow weight limit is apparently 1500 pounds. I have just had the OEM hitch installed at the dealer, and am looking at small pop up campers (never thought I'd be towing with this!)

The camper we have our eye on weighs about 1400, with a few options I would imagine it would be at our limit (FYI the vehicle payload is 1250 and we would be using less than half of that). I am concerned about towing more weight than I can safely handle, and have talked to the dealer and Toyota customer service about adding extra features (transmission cooler etc.) but they have been unhelpful.

Can anyone toss in their opinion?

Thanks, Donny

The only thing you're missing is the cooler. You can add an aftermarket one and that should take you up to the 3500 lb limit. It's the added tow weight that prevents you w/o the cooler. My boat and trailer only weigh about 1000# but I'm adding a cooler to help if I'm towing in hotter than normal summer and up hills or if my buddy needs me to tow his Boston Whaler.

Ok thanks. I've brought this up with my local dealer but they don't install transmission coolers so it looks like I have to go aftermarket.

The tow prep package also has a heavy duty radiator as well, not sure if that is necessary for my needs, or just overkill.

If you are going to tow over the limits of the tow rating, you better at least install a trans cooler and make DARN SURE the trailer has brakes.

Thanks. I won't be towing over the limit, but I'll definitely be close to, or at the limit so hence my nervousness. I'll be sure to get trailer brakes.
