just got a used '09 HL 2.7 base!
Hey all, noob here, I've been benefiting from reading many of your posts before I purchased my new used 2009 Highlander base w/ FWD and 2.7L 4 cylinder engine. It has 26.5K miles and besides a small scratch w/ a tiny crack on the rear bumper and an aftermarket XM receiver that looks kind of uggs (and that I don't plan on using), it's in great shape! Paid $21,700 for it- and didn't negotiate too hard. (Maybe I should have- but the sales lady had been down on her luck- she sold Mitsubishi's). Gave up the sweet leather and sunroof on my '05 Outback that I traded in, but I don't mind the basic interior too much.
Anyways, I got the 4-cylinder because I was hoping for better fuel economy (EPA 20/27), filled it up and went on a test run after I purchased it. I drove my normal routes, not speeding- generally from 60-67 mph on the highway and trying to semi-hypermile it in the city. (85/15 split between the two) Fan off unless I needed AC.
I filled it up again today and calculated my MPG (the base doesn't have a trip computer- boo that) and it only took 2.33 gallons to fill it back up! An average of 32.5 mpg, granted only on a short stretch, but still, after reading some of the stories here, I was a little terrified at what I was going to find, even w/ conservative driving! And the tires were a little under-inflated at 27 psi during the drive. I filled them to 32 psi today- we'll see what it does.
Anyways, thanks for all the useful advice- I'm sure that I'll be reading often!
Cheers, Mike
