Yakima bike rack issue

I just installed Yak's Fork Lift bike carriers on the factory crossbars of my 2011 SE. I had to mount them further inboard than desired (on a flatter portion ) so that the bikes wouldn't tip out due to the crossbars' arc. I had the idea of using hard rubber shims or wedges to shore up the outer edges of the Fork Lift's mounts so I could move them outwards. This would in effect level out the crossbars. I'm guessing that the wedges would be 1/4 or so on the fat end tapering down to zero. Any experience with Fork Lifts or this situation? Thanks.
