Please help! Noise after fluid change - is it bad?

Hello -

I did a search and couldnt find anything. I have a 2009 4cyl with 6 speed. 70,000 miles. I added a transmission cooler last night and also dropped the pan and changed the filter. Everything went fine. I filled the cooler and then added the same amount of new fluid back in. Put in about an extra 1/8 quart of fluid to compensate for hoses. Car runs perfect but after the fluid heats up, when you put it in reverse it makes a weird fast clicking sound the entire time it is in reverse. Has nothing to do with car moving. Put it in reverse it starts, take it out it stops. Has to be the pump. Too much fluid? Too little fluid? I tried jumping the DLC to see the tranny temp but it would not work on my vehicle. Any advice? Thanks so much in advance.

I agree with summerwind. You may get lucky and have a fellow Highlander owner respond with some insight, but odds are slim because there's not as many mechanical types among the owners. Tell you what, post up a new thread to the 2nd Gen Tacoma forum and ask there as it's a very similar vehicle and many have performed the transmission cooler mod. Go for it, I won't consider the other thread a double post.

mmm, I doubt it's the pump--the ones near death I've heard whine when cavitating or make a sand in the bearing noise in all gears. It is possible you have air trapped somewhere related to your fluid, or you have a hose/line vibrating on something it shouldn't (i.e hoses relax when hot). If it goes from neutral to reverse in under 2 seconds and isn't slipping, forward gears shift fine and no dash lights, then I doubt anything serious is wrong.

I would agree with AV Look hard it the lines you put on and your cooler install for anything making contact only when in reverse and engine is slightly torqued.

I did a search in all of my databases and did not come up with any common noises or pattern fails with this tranz. Good luck
