It was cold in the morning, I set the temperature middle and turn the fan on, the ac botton light automatic turn on, I remember last turn the engine off the ac botton ligh was off. Is it normal?
Keep an eye on this issue and see if it keeps happening over the next few weeks. If the issue continues what it may be is the compressor clutch relay for the air conditioner. I had this exact same problem earlier this year and that was the cause. Besides being irritating, the main reason you'll want to get this fixed is when the faulty relay causes the A/C to turn on by itself it's actually been engaging/disengaging the A/C compressor during the entire time your engine has been shut off, which causes a huge drain on your battery. This issue ruined a battery for me...took three years of life right off of it.

If you had it set to defrost or floor/defrost, it does turn on the AC automatically. (just a reminder since you didn't specify which setting you had it on when you turned the fan on)

Excellent point.

Yeah, I couldn't remember whether it lights up when the compressor comes on or not when it's on defrost (it does on the Taco). I've had the Taco for almost 7 years, so I have more things memorized on it than I do on the HL. And it's like the wiper delay switch, Toyota can't seem to decide which way they're gonna go with it.

The A/C does not light up when in the defrost mode as it's "running in the background" to dehumidify the air. I've always felt that's stupid of Toyota to not indicate ANY TIME the A/C is operating. At least that's how I feel about it.

So when I set it face or floor mode from defrost mode, does the A/C still turn on?
Great! Just hate A/C bottle don't light up on defrost mode. Can I set defrost mode with A/C off? I remember my honda can.
It is probably a good thing to leave the AC as designed (to come on with the defrost functions). The load on the AC is minimal in this capacity but more importantly it keeps the "O" rings and seals lubricated in the compressor. Keeping the AC off for an extended time could cause leaks.

Not without doing some electrical mods. People have done it on the Tacoma...

But this is why you really shouldn't do the mod to separate defrost from the AC. Although, there are times when I'd rather leave the compressor off because once you use it, you have to continue to use it lest it cause the fogging situation. IIRC, the recommendation has always been to run the compressor at least once a month to keep the seals lubricated. Can't remember how long it was supposed to be run though (10 minutes)?
