The best price I've found online indicates invoice price for a Highlander Limited 4WD with no difference in taking a vehicle in stock or ordering. Did you find a deal paying below invoice pricing? If so, what did you pay?

I paid close to $2500k under invoice and these are the tricks I used:
Go in at the last week of the month.
There's usually a 1,000 rebate at any given time.
Try to take their hold backs.
Don't agree to their advertising fees and their interest fees.
Worse they can say is "no", to which I say there's a lot of dealers within 75 miles of me.

There is no $1000 rebate on the 2012. There is $1500 dealer cash on remaining 2011's in my region, not sure about yours.
As far as buying a 2012 for $2500 under, good luck. The dealer would have to be pretty desperate to do something that drastic so early in the model year

So, what is a fair deal on 2012 models in MA? $500 under invoice, $1000 under invoice, or would you advise waiting for a better deal later?

Agreed 100%, me thinks we have a liar on this board. I paid $7k off MSRP but that's because I worked for TFS

I'm sure there are many dealerships willing to make nothing, that's what keeps the lights on right?
To the original poster, use edmunds.com for accurate figures on invoice/MSRP/fair prices. In my area we have carmax.com which sells new Toyota's in volume. It took me a lot of work to knock off $800 from the Carmax price back in 2006 (before I started working for corporate), if you get Carmax price you're doing well.
Whatever you do don't buy from Harr Toyota in MA which is the absolute worst dealership I ever saw (in the entire country).

Rebate/Incentive...whatever they were calling it. And yes, I got my HL for about $2,500 off invoice.
The dealers did seem very desperate to make a deal...

For a 2012?
I'm sure there are other factors at hand here. Did you have a trade? Did you finance the vehicle through TFS? Did you purchase any other products with the vehicle (Warranty, GAP, Aftermarket Items)?

No trade in.
I did finance for 2.9% which kinda irked me as there was .0% promotion going on this last weekend.
I bought aftermarket rims through the dealer's speed shop. Probably got hosed on that, but I didn't like the oem rims.
I also remember the dealer was giving an extra $500 promotion because the auto show was in town.
So, you could be right, they made back their money on other things...

Yeah, the 0% is/was available on the 2011 not 2012.
They get a kickback for financing you at 2.9, depending on how much you financed. The rims, yeah that was probably a money maker.
Those promotions, "sales events" ect are just smoke screens to get people in the door. 9/10 people will have a trade or buy something else to make up for the loss.
I typically use edmunds.com and USAA but truecar.com looks promising too. I think it is possible to get a great deal like jdw67 mentioned but I'll settle for $500 - $1500 below invoice.

I think at the very least, you should be able to get $500 off invoice.
To OP, since you are in DC you can go to Carmax in Laurel like JMSinMD suggested or go to Fitzgerald Auto Mall (Toyota) in Gaithersburg, Md. (fitzmall.com). They are selling 2012 HL Limited 4WD for appx. $222 below invoice.
After all was said and done, I only got like $150.00 under invoice for my 2011 Limited. Took about a week of calling dealerships and haggling.
I ended up getting the 1.9% 60 month financing through Toyota so I wasn't able to get any other discounts.
The way I personally did it was search for the car configured the way I wanted, I calculated the invoice price (not including the dealer holdback) and I just calculated my own TT&L fee on top. Then I called the internet manager and gave them a straight up OTD price, which was usually a few hundred under invoice.
I had a few managers laugh me off and then a few I ended up in a negotiation battle with. The funniest part was there were 2 or 3 of the managers who laughed me off, ended up calling me a week later asking if I still wanted it at the price I asked. Too late for them.
