Auto On/Off Headlights

Hi, I have 2009 Highlander base model with auto on/off headlights. The auto headlights don't come on during gloomy days or dusk/dawn. It has to be pretty dark before they come on. So I often need to manually turn them on (and risk forgetting to turn them off). Does anybody know if the sensor sensitivity can be adjusted so they come on sooner?

On the 2010/2011 there are something like 5-steps of sensitivity which can be set by the dealer. I'm sure it is the same on your model. My '11 is similar, the headlights do not always turn on when the days are gloomy. I've been considering having the dealer increase the sensitivity by one-click on my next service visit.

The dealer can do it with their diagnostic tool called Techstream. I do this fairly often on all sorts of Toyotas.

Wow! This is awesome news! Never knew you (or I guess your dealer) could adjust it! For the auto headlights on my Grand Prix, it pretty much has to be black! The HL is a little better, but it still needs to be decently dark. My dads Rendezvous' automatic headlights come on on cloudy rainy days, and I loved that.

So glad I now know this is adjustable.

^^Good stuff here.

The 2011 has auto off headlights too. If they are manually left on, they will eventually turn off saving the dreaded dead battery...

Does that auto off work if it is activated via the passenger side door? As in, get in the passenger side, turn on the key.. listen to the radio (lights come on).. shut the radio off, remove key and get out via the passenger side.

The lights stay on.. I have not waited to see if they eventually go off (auto off) but I suspect not.
