Snow tires question?

I was reading up on the 11/12 models and I see many of you guys are putting snow tires on.. Is the stocks that bad? Another thing I would like to know is how come when you put snow tires on, you are also getting new rims as well? Is there a reason for this or can you just put snow tires on the stock rims?

Thanks

I drove for 1 winter on my Toyo A20's - never, ever again will I drive without winter tires, they suck. You can mount winters on stock wheels, Toyota wheels are known to peel and pit so many of us choose winter wheels to mount our winters on.

shops charge about $80 to change tires to snows, some more than that, then again in the spring. thats at least $200 per year,
after 3 years its equal to the cost of the tires. buy a used set of rav4 steel 17 inch wheels or similar and forego the TPMS tire pressure system and live with the light ON for the winter.

i just picked up a set of rav4 17"steel wheels, lugs and bridgestone blizzaks with about 1 season of wear for $300 on cragislist. tire is a little smaller than the HL stock size, but should be great in the snow.

Here are some pictures (they're of wheels on the Tacoma but that doesn't matter).

Besides the cost of mounting and balancing the tires, there is also a concern about repeat stretching and deforming of the bead each time you mount and dismount the tire from the rim; the concern relates to damaging the bead.

Besides, $400 for a set of 17" OEM rims that JMsinMD is selling to be used as winter rims would be a great option.
